Protect Power Infrastructure, Avoid Right of Way Encroachment,” TCN Urges Ogun Communities

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has called on residents of Ogun State to protect power installations and avoid encroaching on transmission line Right of Way corridors, warning that such actions pose serious safety and electricity supply risks.

The appeal was made during a sensitisation programme organised by the TCN Benin Region on May 22, 2026, as part of efforts to curb vandalism and strengthen the protection of critical power infrastructure.

In a statement signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN said the outreach was designed to educate host communities on the importance of safeguarding transmission facilities and promptly reporting suspicious activities.

Speaking on behalf of the General Manager, Benin Region, Engr. Charles C. Iwuamadi, the Assistant General Manager, Engr. Mathew Ariyibi, said the initiative became necessary due to rising cases of vandalism and encroachment along transmission corridors.

“Patrol teams have discovered cases where tower components were tampered with. Community members are often the first to notice unusual movements around these facilities and must report them promptly,” Ariyibi stated.

He added that TCN is collaborating with local vigilantes and community leaders to monitor installations, especially in rural areas where transmission lines pass through.

Addressing safety concerns, the Principal Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, Mr. Abaniyo Otaru, warned against constructing buildings within transmission corridors, noting that such actions endanger lives and disrupt electricity supply.

“These lines carry up to 330 kilovolts of electricity. Tampering with them or building under them is extremely dangerous and can destabilise power supply,” Otaru said.

Also speaking, Engr. Pius Afonriwo described vandalism as a major challenge affecting power transmission nationwide and urged residents to support efforts to protect the infrastructure.

“These facilities belong to all Nigerians. We must work together to safeguard them,” he added.

Responding on behalf of the host community, the Moyegesho of Itele Kingdom, Oba Mufutau Kasali, represented by Chief Stephen Pledge, assured TCN of the community’s commitment to protecting transmission installations in the area.

The sensitisation programme is part of TCN’s broader strategy to prevent vandalism, discourage Right of Way violations, and enhance the reliability of electricity transmission across Nigeria.
