The Oyo State Police Command has debunked a viral social media video claiming that about 300 Lukarawa terrorists had infiltrated Oyo State, describing the report as false, misleading and deliberately designed to cause panic among residents.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, assuring residents that there is no security threat linked to the claim.
According to the police, a comprehensive forensic analysis and intelligence-based investigation revealed that the video was fabricated to spread fear, tension and unnecessary anxiety among the public.
The Command explained that the voice-over attached to the video, allegedly credited to one Alhaji Muftau from Kontagora, was traced to previous false security alerts that had already been investigated and debunked.
DSP Olayinka said intelligence gathered from operatives stationed in border communities, alongside the Command’s strengthened early warning and response systems, found no evidence supporting the allegation.
“In addition to these findings, a joint verification process carried out in collaboration with neighbouring Police Commands independently confirmed that the information is entirely unfounded,” the statement said.
The Police further disclosed that investigations showed the video was neither recorded in Nigeria nor a recent event, reinforcing suspicions that it was deliberately recycled to mislead the public and create unnecessary panic.
The Command warned individuals and groups against spreading false information capable of threatening public peace and security.
It stressed that anyone found circulating fake security alerts or misinformation aimed at inciting fear and disorder would be investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Command said that under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, it remains vigilant and determined to sustain peace and security across Oyo State.
The Police assured residents that all lawful measures would continue to be deployed to preserve the state’s security gains and ensure that anyone attempting to disrupt public order is brought to justice.
The Command therefore urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding and obtain security information only from verified and official sources.
