The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has hinted that the upcoming African Military Games, set for November 18-30, 2024 is more than just a sporting event, it’s a statement to showcase Nigeria’s stability, hospitality, and leadership on the African stage”.
He , however, praised the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) for securing Abuja as the host of the upcoming African Military Games, where over 3,000 athletes and officials from across Africa will gather in Nigeria’s capital to highlight the unity of the continent’s armed forces, projecting Nigeria as a symbol of progress and peace across Africa.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Wike emphasized that the event is more than a sporting competition. “This is a window for the world to see that Abuja is not just safe but vibrant with culture, diversity, and opportunity,” he said.
Wike stressed that hosting the games is about diplomacy and unity, affirming that the FCT administration will leave no stone unturned to ensure its success. He also highlighted the importance of showing the human side of the military, as soldiers will participate in various sports, reflecting stories of perseverance, strength, and resilience.
As the event approaches, Wike assured that preparations are well underway, with the FCT working closely with security agencies and organizers to ensure a smooth, secure, and memorable experience for all visitors. “We are leaving nothing to chance,” Wike said, adding that Abuja will be ready to shine on the global stage, attracting international spectators, diplomats, and dignitaries from across Africa.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has hailed the African Military Games as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to peace across the continent. Announcing Nigeria’s role as the host for the games, General Musa highlighted the significance of this prestigious event, which will bring together military personnel from across Africa to compete in various sports, fostering camaraderie and strengthening military cooperation. He emphasized that the event would highlight Nigeria’s role as a key player in promoting peace and unity.
FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike reinforced this message, noting that hosting over 3,000 military athletes would help shift global perceptions of Abuja and Nigeria. Wike described the event as a platform to demonstrate the city’s security, cultural diversity, and progress. Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Timothy Marquis, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), announced that the African Military Games will return to Abuja after a 22-year hiatus, with the first edition held in Nairobi, Kenya. This second edition aims to strengthen military ties across Africa, promoting peace through sports rather than conflict. With the theme “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” the games are expected to draw 3,000 athletes and officials from 27 nations, participating in 19 sports, including combat sports and traditional African games.
Marquis also highlighted the vital support of FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, whose leadership has been crucial in organizing the event. The games will not only enhance security and cooperation in Nigeria but also serve as a platform for showcasing unity and peaceful coexistence across the continent through sports.
