Abuja – The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has given the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) a 48-hour ultimatum to clean up the city, following growing concerns over poor waste management in the Federal Capital Territory. Chief Felix Obuah, the Coordinator of the AMMC, issued the directive after an emergency meeting with AEPB management and refuse contractors on Monday.
The move comes after Chief Obuah’s inspection of key districts, including Asokoro, Maitama, and other areas, where he expressed disappointment at the state of refuse evacuation. He stated, “As the nation’s capital, Abuja must set the standard for cleanliness across Nigeria, and this current situation is unacceptable.”
Obuah instructed AEPB Director, Mr. Osi Braimah, to ensure that immediate actions were taken to clean up areas like Asokoro, Guzape, Wuse, and the Central Business District. He also ordered the recall of casual workers to speed up the cleanup process.
He further warned underperforming contractors that failure to meet their responsibilities would have serious repercussions, especially with FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike reportedly displeased with the situation. “Swift action must be taken to restore Abuja’s status as a model city,” Obuah stressed.
In response, Director Braimah assured the AMMC that the AEPB would comply with the directive, promising visible changes within the stipulated 48 hours.
