President Bola Tinubu is currently hosting a closed-door meeting with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and prominent leaders from Ogoniland to discuss critical issues, including the Ogoni clean-up project and the possible resumption of oil exploration in the area. The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, has drawn significant attention due to the longstanding environmental and economic challenges facing Ogoniland.
The delegation includes Senators Lee Maeba, Magnus Abe, and Olaka Nwogu, as well as other key stakeholders like Victor Giadom, Kenneth Kobani, and Monsignor Pius Kii. Senior federal officials such as National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari are also in attendance. The discussions are believed to address the 2011 UNEP report highlighting severe environmental degradation in Ogoniland and concerns raised by civil society organisations demanding $1 trillion for clean-up and compensation. These developments come as the Federal Government seeks to address the prolonged halt in oil production, which has significantly impacted Nigeria’s GDP amid an ongoing energy crisis.
