2027: ADP Moves to Consensus Primaries, Targets United Front Ahead of Elections
Says Strategy Aligns with Electoral Act, INEC Guidelines
Yabagi: Consensus Will Deepen Unity, Boost Party’s Winning Chances
The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has announced plans to adopt consensus-based primaries as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections, describing the move as a strategic step to strengthen internal cohesion and improve its electoral performance.
The decision was disclosed on Wednesday during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja.
Speaking at the meeting, the National Chairman of the party, Yabagi Sani, said the approach was in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that it would ensure transparency in candidate selection.
“As we look ahead to the 2027 General Elections, we must be guided by the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” Sani said.
“Our approach is clear, lawful, and strategic. We shall conduct consensus-based primaries, in full compliance with the law. We shall ensure that our processes are transparent and present candidates who are credible, competent, and electable.”
He added that the party was not merely preparing to participate in elections but to win responsibly and govern effectively.
Sani also cautioned members against internal wrangling and indiscipline, stressing that unity remained critical to the party’s success as it moves toward its national convention, primaries, and campaign activities.
“There is no room for division. There is no room for indiscipline. The interest of the party must always supersede individual ambition,” he said.
According to him, the ADP is undergoing a broad repositioning process aimed at transforming it into a stronger political alternative for Nigerians.
He noted that the party had expanded its membership base across the country and introduced digital reforms to improve internal efficiency and transparency.
“Nigeria today faces significant challenges—economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust in governance. We believe Nigeria can work—and we are prepared to make it work,” he said.
Sani further explained that the party had strengthened its internal structures and commenced digitisation of its operations through an online portal to enhance inclusiveness and accessibility.
The ADP said it would intensify preparations for its national convention, primaries, and campaign activities as it builds up to the 2027 general elections.
