2027 Elections: Arewa Youth Assembly Alleges Plot by Governors to Undermine Tinubu’s Re-election

Fresh political tensions have emerged within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Arewa Youth Assembly alleged that some state governors are working to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At a press briefing in Abuja, the group warned that attempts to create division within the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) could destabilise the APC and pose risks to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

The Assembly claimed that certain political actors are orchestrating internal cracks within the governors’ forum as part of a broader strategy to weaken the ruling party and frustrate Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

APC Unity Under Pressure

Drawing parallels with the political crisis that preceded the 2015 elections, the group cautioned that unresolved internal conflicts could have far-reaching consequences for the APC if not urgently addressed.

It alleged that Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has come under pressure due to his strong alignment with President Tinubu and his stance on party cohesion.

The Assembly specifically accused Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah of allegedly fueling divisions among APC governors, describing the situation as a threat to party unity.

Power Rotation Debate Resurfaces

The group also weighed in on Nigeria’s power rotation principle, insisting that the presidency should remain in the South until 2031 in line with existing political arrangements.

It warned that any attempt to disrupt this balance could intensify political tensions and undermine national stability ahead of the 2027 elections.

48-Hour Ultimatum, Impeachment Call

In a strong-worded position, the Arewa Youth Assembly issued a 48-hour ultimatum to those allegedly involved in the plot to publicly apologise to President Tinubu, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, and the APC leadership.

It further called on the Ogun and Enugu State Houses of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against the affected governors, alleging that their actions threaten democratic order.

Group Reaffirms Support for Tinubu

Reaffirming its backing for President Tinubu, the group pledged to mobilise youth support nationwide to protect the unity of the APC and ensure the President’s re-election in 2027.

Observers say the development reflects early political alignments and internal contestations within the ruling party as stakeholders begin positioning ahead of the next general elections.
