The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has restated its commitment to promoting equal opportunities and sustainable development for children across the Niger Delta region.
Managing Director of the Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, made this known during the 2026 International Children’s Day celebration held in Port Harcourt, with the theme: “The Future Now – Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child.”
Ogbuku, who was represented by the Deputy Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Mrs. Chioma Nwakwue, said the Commission remains focused not only on infrastructure development but also on human capital investment, particularly children.
He stressed that every child deserves protection, education, and equal opportunity regardless of background or circumstance.
“Children’s Day is a reminder of our responsibility to protect every child in the Niger Delta and ensure equal opportunities for all,” he said.
The NDDC boss added that the Commission’s interventions in education, healthcare, school infrastructure, digital skills, and social welfare are aimed at building a more inclusive and prosperous region.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the declaration of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development.
He noted that inclusive development begins with deliberate investment in children’s growth and future.
A guest speaker at the event, Dr. Moses Egorerua, urged children to take their education seriously, describing it as a fundamental right and key to personal and national development.
He also encouraged responsible use of social media for learning and self-development, while advising them to engage in community service to build leadership skills.
Highlights of the celebration included the distribution of educational materials such as U-Lesson tablets, school bags, and other learning tools to pupils.
The event underscored renewed calls for equal access to quality education, healthcare, digital skills, and child protection across Nigeria.
