Mexico Beat Korea Republic 1-0, Reach World Cup Round of 32

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — Mexico secured a place in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a 1-0 victory over Korea Republic, becoming the first team to advance from Group A.

Luis Romo scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute, capitalising on a defensive mix-up between goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu and defender Lee Gihyuk to slot into an unguarded net at the Guadalajara Stadium.

The win means Mexico top Group A with six points from two matches, recording back-to-back victories and maintaining a perfect defensive record.

The first half produced few chances, with both teams struggling to create clear openings. Mexico increased pressure after the break, with Jesus Gallardo testing the Korean defence moments before the breakthrough.

Korea Republic pushed for an equaliser but were denied by Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel, who made a double save late in the game to preserve the lead. Kim also made a key stop earlier to deny Raul Jimenez from close range.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said the match was decided by a single moment.

“It was difficult. We know them very well. They put us under a lot of pressure. In the end, it felt like one mistake was always going to make the difference,” he said.

Korea Republic coach Hong Myungbo said his team would focus on their final group match.

“The way we conceded was disappointing. We will give everything in the last game of the group stage,” he said.

Mexico will face a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H or I in the Round of 32 scheduled for June 30 in Mexico City.
