MINNA — The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Victor Olaiya, to coordinate the rescue of more than 30 worshippers abducted by suspected armed bandits in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The victims, mostly women and children, were abducted from a mosque in the area. The rescue operation is being carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, with the aim of securing the victims’ safe return to their families.
Speaking to journalists at the Government House, Minna, on efforts to rescue the abductees, the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Bello Magaji, said the administration of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago would continue to provide security agencies with the necessary support to tackle insecurity across the state.
Magaji, who was accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Ellema, represented by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu A. Abiodun, expressed concern over attempts by some individuals to politicise the security challenges confronting Niger State and the country.
The commissioner urged members of the public, particularly residents of rural communities, to support security agencies in the fight against terrorists and armed bandits.
He noted that criminals operate within communities and called on residents to expose suspicious individuals and activities to prevent further attacks.
Also speaking through the Command’s PPRO, CP Ellema appreciated the Niger State Government for its continued support to security agencies.
He disclosed that the rescue operation commenced on Thursday in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police.
“The rescue operations of abducted victims begins today in strict compliance with the directives of the IGP, Tunji Disu,” he said.
According to him, security agencies are currently analysing available intelligence and strategising to ensure a successful and hitch-free operation.
He added that the Command would deploy specialised units, including the Counter-Terrorism Unit and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team provided by the IGP, to support the rescue mission.
The police commissioner assured that all necessary measures would be taken to rescue the abducted worshippers and reunite them safely with their families.
