The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Dr Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, has identified continuous staff training and professional development as critical to improving grid stability and strengthening Nigeria’s electricity system.
Akin-Olugbade said equipping workers with the right skills and technical knowledge would enhance operational efficiency and enable the organisation to deliver on its mandate.
He spoke while addressing participants at a staff training programme at NISO headquarters in Abuja, where he reaffirmed the board’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for employees to grow professionally.
The board chairman encouraged staff to communicate their concerns directly to him, stressing that open communication and continuous learning were essential to building an effective workforce.
He noted that the growing technical demands of Nigeria’s electricity industry made regular capacity building necessary to prepare personnel for their operational responsibilities.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, disclosed that the ongoing programme was the sixth batch of System Operators training organised by the institution.
Mohammed explained that the organisation’s capacity-building initiatives covered all categories of staff, not just System Operators.
According to him, the programmes were designed to boost workers’ morale, strengthen professional competence and equip employees with the knowledge required to perform their duties efficiently.
He said investing in staff development remained an important part of NISO’s efforts to build the human capacity required to manage Nigeria’s electricity system effectively.
System Operators play a vital role in monitoring grid conditions, coordinating power system operations and maintaining the stability of the national electricity grid. Their technical expertise is crucial to managing electricity transmission and coordinating power supply across the country.
The lead facilitator, Mr Rotimi Amos of Szotyola Energy, commended NISO’s board and management for prioritising staff training and promoting knowledge transfer within the organisation.
Amos urged the management to sustain the initiative, noting that continuous learning was essential to improving professional competence and strengthening institutional capacity.
He also highlighted the importance of knowledge-sharing programmes in helping employees acquire new skills and respond effectively to evolving operational challenges.
NISO’s focus on workforce development comes amid the complex technical demands of managing Nigeria’s electricity system, where skilled personnel and effective coordination are vital to grid reliability.
The organisation said its training initiatives were aimed at developing a more competent workforce capable of supporting its operational objectives and improving electricity system management.
