CAN President Okoh Felicitates Muslims on Eid-el-Fitr, Condemns Edo Mob Killings

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has extended warm Eid-el-Fitr greetings to the Muslim community, while also raising concerns over pressing national issues, particularly the recent mob killing of sixteen hunters in Edo State.

In a statement on Sunday, Archbishop Okoh described Eid-el-Fitr as a time of deep spiritual reflection, emphasizing the shared values between Christians and Muslims, including prayer, fasting, charity, and community. However, he lamented the insecurity, economic hardships, and social unrest affecting the nation.

Condemnation of Mob Killings in Edo State

The CAN President strongly condemned the extrajudicial killing of sixteen hunters who were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Eid celebrations but were mistaken for kidnappers and brutally lynched in Uromi, Edo State.

> “This extrajudicial killing is a grievous violation of human rights and a chilling reminder of the dangers of lawlessness,” Okoh stated. “These innocent men were denied any chance of due process and suffered a horrific fate—beaten and burned alive in an act of mob violence.”

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by violence across the country, warning that such tragedies erode public trust in the legal system and highlight the urgent need for effective law enforcement.

Call for Justice and Strengthening of the Rule of Law

Archbishop Okoh urged the government to launch a thorough investigation into the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.

> “The government must act decisively to address these failures and uphold the rule of law,” he said. “Leaders at all levels must promote understanding and reject mob actions. CAN reaffirms its commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders to build a stronger and more peaceful Nigeria.”

A Message of Peace and Unity

The CAN President further called on Nigerians to resist violence, support one another, and work towards peace and security.

> “As we extend our goodwill on Eid-el-Fitr, let us embrace compassion, forgiveness, and mutual respect—values that can lead us toward a Nigeria where every life is cherished and protected,” Okoh concluded.

Eid Mubarak to the Muslim Community!
