The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled an ambitious revenue target of N1.13 trillion for the Tin-can Island Port Command, representing 27 percent of the national target. The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, revealed this, stating that in 2023, the command achieved 89 percent of its N801.5 billion revenue target by collecting N716.5 billion.
For 2024, the Controller General of Customs and management have increased the target to N1.13 trillion, with a monthly goal of N94.23 billion, equivalent to N21.7 billion per week and N4.23 billion daily. Nnadi expressed confidence in meeting this target, citing the command’s performance in 2023, where the weekly target of N66 billion was consistently exceeded, averaging N76 billion from June to December.
In emphasizing the importance of stakeholders, Nnadi declared 2024 as the “year of stakeholders,” urging cooperation to ensure compliance and proper duty declarations. He acknowledged Nigeria’s import-driven economy and outlined strategies to expedite cargo clearance, minimizing demurrage costs for freight forwarders.
The ambitious revenue target reflects the government’s focus on customs revenue as a significant contributor to national coffers, but achieving it will require efficient collaboration among customs officers, stakeholders, and a streamlined cargo clearance process.
