Empowering Communities: FCTA-ACReSAL Distributes Tractors, Tillers, and Agro Inputs to Boost Food Security , Sustainability

In a landmark initiative, the Federal Capital Territory Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (FCT-ACReSAL) Project Implementation Unit has distributed 10 tractors, 140 power-tillers, and other essential agro inputs to Community Interest Groups (CIGs) in Abuja. This effort aims to enhance community resilience against climate change, improve livelihoods, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

The distribution, which took place in Kwali, included three utility vehicles, improved seeds, fertilizers, insecticides, and other agro chemicals. Additionally, one of the eight solar-powered boreholes was inaugurated at the Sheda Cassava Women Processing Centre, providing access to potable water for daily living and agricultural activities.

Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, emphasized the project’s commitment to reclaiming degraded lands and improving community livelihoods. She noted that the FCT has struggled with large-scale land degradation for 48 years, resulting in substantial loss of tree covers. However, she expressed optimism that the ACReSAL project’s bold initiatives will restore over 10,000 hectares of degraded land.

The minister highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges faced by farmers, including limited access to critical agricultural inputs and knowledge of sustainable landscape management practices. She stressed that the distribution of inputs is a strategic response to these challenges, aiming to build farmers’ resilience and contribute to food security and sustainable development in the FCT.

The Mandate Secretary, Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mr. Lawson Geidam, assured that necessary structures are in place for smooth project implementation. He explained that the three utility vehicles will be handed over to institutions to enhance their capacities to serve communities better.

The ACReSAL project, supported by the World Bank, targets the reclamation of degraded lands and improvement of community livelihoods in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. With this initiative, the FCTA-ACReSAL demonstrates its commitment to securing a brighter future for citizens, where their livelihoods and wellbeing are protected and enhanced.
