Fasoranti @100: Tinubu Hails Afenifere Leader as Symbol of Courage, Justice, Legacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as a rare national figure whose life embodies courage, sacrifice, justice, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals.

Tinubu made the tribute on Monday during the 100th birthday celebration of the revered Yoruba leader in Akure, Ondo State, where top political leaders and dignitaries gathered to honour a century of influence and service.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said Fasoranti’s life represents “the courage of prophets, the patience of teachers, the sacrifices of patriots, and the dignity of elders,” noting that his legacy stands as a moral compass for Nigeria’s leadership and future generations.

Tinubu: Fasoranti a Voice for Justice and the Oppressed

The President praised Fasoranti for consistently standing on the side of justice, even in the face of personal risk and political pressure.

He noted that unlike many who embrace public service for personal gain, the Afenifere leader chose the difficult path of advocacy, speaking up for the vulnerable and resisting oppression across different eras of Nigeria’s history.

“Chief Fasoranti gave voice to the underrepresented and rejected the silence of privilege. He embraced the burden of principle and stood firm for justice and fairness,” Tinubu said.

He added that Fasoranti’s life journey—from the colonial era through independence, military rule, and democratic governance—positions him as a key witness and contributor to Nigeria’s political evolution.

“A Century of Honour and Sacrifice” — Aiyedatiwa

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, described the centenary celebration as more than a birthday, calling it a historic moment marking “a century of honour, sacrifice, conviction, and service to humanity.”

According to him, Fasoranti is not just an elder statesman but an institution whose leadership has shaped values of integrity, discipline, and principled governance.

“His life is a bridge between where we came from and who we must become. He represents a generation that believes leadership is a sacred duty, not a tool for personal gain,” Aiyedatiwa said.

The governor urged younger Nigerians to draw lessons from Fasoranti’s life, stressing that true greatness is built on consistency, discipline, and commitment to truth rather than fleeting success.

Mimiko: Fasoranti Embodies Humility, Resilience

Former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, also paid tribute, describing Fasoranti as humility personified and a resilient leader whose life continues to inspire.

“We are celebrating resilience and humility. Baba has taught us invaluable lessons, and we believe he will continue to live long to see more of his dreams fulfilled,” Mimiko said.

Gathering of Political Heavyweights

The event attracted prominent political figures, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, alongside traditional rulers, political leaders, and associates from across the country.

Analysts say Fasoranti’s 100th birthday celebration underscores his enduring relevance in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, particularly as a leading voice in the Afenifere movement and advocate for justice, equity, and national unity.

As tributes continue to pour in, the centenarian’s life is widely regarded as a symbol of principled leadership and a reminder of the values required to build a more just and inclusive Nigeria.
