Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, in the sum of ₦100 million in connection with the alleged wiretapping case brought by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik delivered the ruling today, Monday, May 18, 2026. However, the court adjourned proceedings for continuation of hearing by 1pm, and El-Rufai will remain in the custody of security operatives (DSS) pending the fulfillment of bail conditions and further proceedings.
Background of the Case
El-Rufai was arraigned on April 23, 2026, before the same court on a five-count amended charge bordering on unlawful interception of communications, breach of national security, and related offences under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
The charges stem from allegations that he intentionally and without authorization intercepted the communications of National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. El-Rufai has pleaded not guilty to all counts. The DSS claims the actions compromised national security.
This wiretapping case is separate from the ongoing corruption charges filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where he was earlier granted ₦200 million bail with strict conditions.
