ABUJA – A socio-political group, the New Agenda for South-South Development (NASSD), has applauded the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), Hon. Julius Gbabojor Pondi, for championing an amendment to the South-South Development Commission (Establishment) Act, 2025.
The group described the lawmaker as a committed advocate of the region’s development, saying his push to strengthen the Commission would enhance its capacity to tackle infrastructure deficits and socio-economic challenges across the South-South.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Kufre Thomas, NASSD praised Pondi for sponsoring and driving the amendment bill aimed at expanding the Commission’s funding base.
According to the group, the proposed amendment would provide the SSDC with additional financial resources needed to execute critical projects across Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers states.
“We are pleased to commend Hon. Julius Gbabojor Pondi for his dedication to the progress of the South-South. His efforts in advancing this amendment bill reflect a clear understanding of the needs of the region and a determination to provide lasting legislative solutions,” Thomas said.
The group noted that the amendment bill, HB 2674, seeks to close funding gaps that could hinder the Commission’s ability to fulfil its mandate.
It said the additional funding would strengthen interventions in key sectors, including road infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture and environmental protection.
“By pushing for this amendment, Hon. Pondi is helping to ensure that the Commission has the financial resources needed to execute impactful projects. This is the kind of leadership the South-South requires,” the statement added.
NASSD also commended Pondi for ensuring an open and inclusive public hearing on the amendment bill, saying stakeholders were given the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the legislative process.
The group further described the lawmaker as a consistent voice for the Niger Delta, citing his contributions to environmental protection, resource management, community development and infrastructure.
It urged members of the National Assembly to fast-track the passage of the amendment bill, insisting that stronger funding would enable the Commission to deliver more effectively on its mandate.
NASSD also called on lawmakers from the South-South to unite behind the legislation, saying the region deserves stronger institutions capable of addressing decades of environmental degradation and infrastructural neglect.
