A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Inuwa Garba (APC, Gombe), has pledged to champion peace-building initiatives and dialogue to tackle Nigeria’s lingering farmer-herder crisis, declaring that he will serve as “a bridge that unites people” following his inauguration as a Global Peace Ambassador by the World Human Rights and Peace Commission (WHRAPC-Nigeria).
Speaking shortly after the investiture ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, the lawmaker representing Yamaltu/Deba Federal Constituency described the honour as a call to greater service, saying it comes with a responsibility to promote peace, justice, human dignity and conflict resolution. Garba assured the commission that the confidence reposed in him would not be misplaced, adding that he would begin from his constituency by organising a comprehensive peace and dialogue symposium aimed at finding lasting solutions to the farmer-herder conflict.
The lawmaker noted that his experience in public service, including his tenure as Chairman of the Conference of Speakers and his engagements with international parliamentary bodies, had equipped him with the knowledge and networks needed to promote peaceful coexistence. He stressed that Nigeria’s growing security challenges, social unrest and environmental concerns require collective action, insisting that peace remains everyone’s responsibility.
Presenting the award, the Deputy Country Coordinator of WHRAPC-Nigeria, Ambassador Lawal Ribah, described Garba as an outstanding legislator whose public service has been marked by integrity, accountability and selfless leadership. Ribah said the lawmaker had sponsored several bills and motions on entrepreneurship, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, security, education and environmental protection, while also empowering youths and women through various constituency interventions.
Also speaking, the Northern Regional Coordinator of the commission, Ambassador Bashir Maradun, said the Global Peace Ambassador title is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to justice, unity and humanity. In a goodwill message, Rep. Bob Solomon (APC, Rivers) congratulated Garba, describing him as a humble, dependable and peace-loving leader whose dedication to national development and inclusive leadership deserved the recognition.
