INEC Rejects Petition to Recall Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District, citing its failure to meet constitutional requirements.

In an official statement released via its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, INEC clarified that the petition did not satisfy the provisions of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“The petition for the recall of the Senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution,” the electoral body stated.

The recall process, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution, requires a petition signed by at least half of the registered voters in the affected constituency. INEC did not provide further details on the specific deficiencies in the submitted petition.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was elected to the Senate in the 2023 general elections. The recall attempt has sparked political debate in Kogi State, with supporters and opponents weighing in on the development.

As the situation unfolds, INEC has reiterated its commitment to upholding constitutional and electoral guidelines in handling such petitions.
