JUNE 12: Tinubu To Address N’Assembly As FG Unveils Democracy Day Programme

President Bola Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The Federal Government announced the programme on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee set up to coordinate events for the annual commemoration.

Apart from the President’s address to lawmakers, activities lined up for the celebration include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12 and a Democracy Day Gala Night.

Inaugurating the committee, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of the June 12 struggle, describing the anniversary as a historic opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that paved the way for democratic governance in Nigeria.

Akume said the democratic institutions and freedoms Nigerians enjoy today were built on the courage and sacrifices of patriots who fought tirelessly for the restoration of democracy.

He noted that the celebration would also provide an opportunity for the Tinubu administration to showcase its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values, institutional strengthening and national development.

According to him, despite prevailing socio-economic challenges, the government remains focused on deepening democracy and implementing reforms aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

The SGF directed members of the committee to commence work immediately to ensure a successful celebration, adding that this year’s Democracy Day events would be modest but purposeful in line with the government’s commitment to prudent spending.

Nigeria marks Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola, and to celebrate the country’s democratic journey.
