LAGOS — One person has been confirmed dead and two others injured following two separate road crashes on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Friday, forcing traffic diversions along the busy corridor.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, said the first and more severe crash occurred around 12:05 a.m. on the outbound lane toward Ibadan, involving five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna bus.
According to the agency, preliminary findings linked the crash to excessive speed and loss of control. “Seven adult males were involved in the collision, with one person confirmed dead, one injured, and five others unhurt,” the FRSC said, adding that the victim’s body remained trapped beneath a heavily loaded truck as recovery efforts continued.
A second accident occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on the inbound lane toward Lagos, involving a Mazda commercial bus. The FRSC attributed the crash to brake failure, noting that the driver sustained serious injuries and was rescued and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre.
Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, commiserated with the victims’ families and urged motorists to comply with traffic directives around the scene.
“Motorists should avoid the Kara-Ojodu Berger corridor where possible and use alternative routes until normal traffic flow is restored,” Hamzat said.
The FRSC advised motorists heading toward Ibadan to divert through the Ikorodu-Sagamu route, while Lagos-bound drivers were urged to consider the Lekki-Epe Expressway or Ikorodu-Sagamu corridor.
The Corps also warned drivers—particularly operators of articulated vehicles and commercial buses—to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound, with emphasis on brake systems, while discouraging unnecessary night travel due to reduced visibility and fatigue risks.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), were still working to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow as of press time.
