Labour Strike: Makinde/Daura Campaign Bombs Tinubu Over Economic Hardship

The Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation (MDPCO) has described the three-day warning strike by organised labour as a “referendum” on the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Federal Government of worsening hardship among Nigerians.

The campaign organisation said the industrial action, driven by concerns over workers’ welfare and the rising cost of living, exposed growing dissatisfaction with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration.

Director of Strategic Communication of the MDPCO, Richard Ihediwa, stated this in a statement issued on Sunday.

Ihediwa said the labour action was a direct consequence of what he described as “ill-conceived and poorly implemented” economic policies, arguing that the demands contained in Labour’s Charter of Demands had exposed a wide gap between government’s claims of economic progress and the realities confronting workers.

He described the warning strike as “a direct referendum on a failed government”, saying it should raise questions about the administration’s quest for a second term.

“How can a government that failed to shield its citizens from the consequences of its policies, credibly ask the same citizens to renew its mandate?” he asked.

The campaign organisation also faulted the government over alleged delays in capital budget implementation, repeated budget rollovers, rising borrowing and inadequate transparency and accountability.

It further criticised what it described as unfulfilled promises following the removal of fuel subsidy.

According to Ihediwa, the economic reforms being celebrated by the government had yet to translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

He said rising living costs and declining purchasing power had made official economic statistics and claims of progress less convincing to citizens struggling to provide basic necessities.

“When wages lose value, the cost of living keeps rising and workers barely survive, government statistics and celebratory claims become meaningless,” he said.

The MDPCO called for economic reforms centred on citizens’ welfare, including transparent social safety nets capable of protecting livelihoods and cushioning the impact of government policies.

Ihediwa also accused the APC administration of failing to meet what he described as the basic requirements of good governance, insisting that Nigerians deserved a government capable of delivering measurable results.

The campaign organisation presented the Makinde/Daura ticket as an alternative ahead of the 2027 presidential election through its “RESET Nigeria Agenda”.

It described the agenda as a data-driven and people-focused programme built around national production, security, inclusion, transparency and accountability.

Ihediwa said the proposed administration of Oyo State Governor and APM presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, and his running mate, Musa Daura, would prioritise economic recovery and improved welfare for Nigerians.

He also claimed that Nigerians across political divides were increasingly identifying with Makinde’s presidential ambition.

The MDPCO urged Nigerians to use the 2027 election to demand what it described as a government capable of restoring economic stability, protecting livelihoods and making the country work for all citizens.
