In the aftermath of the attempted coup in Sierra Leone, the Nigerian Federal Government has provided former president Ernest Bai Koroma, accused of treason by his successor Julius Maada Bio, with temporary asylum in Abuja.
A letter signed by Omar Alieu Touray and addressed to President Bio states that Nigeria has offered to host Koroma temporarily, and he has accepted the offer.
The letter outlines arrangements, including the discontinuation of legal procedures against Koroma, the disbursement of benefits, and securing his residences in Sierra Leone.
However, Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister expressed the government’s non-support for the proposition.
The attempted coup occurred in November 2023, following which Koroma faced treason charges.
The former president denies involvement, and supporters argue the charges are politically motivated.
