Nigeria and the United States have carried out a joint military operation that resulted in the killing of a senior Islamic State (IS) leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, in the Lake Chad Basin.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu disclosed this on Saturday, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
“Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, along with several of his lieutenants,” Tinubu said.
The President noted that the operation was executed by Nigerian Armed Forces in close collaboration with their United States counterparts, highlighting the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling terrorism.
According to him, the strike targeted the insurgent leader’s compound in the Lake Chad region, a known hotspot for extremist activities.
Tinubu commended the professionalism and courage of military personnel involved in the mission, stating that the success underscores Nigeria’s commitment to dismantling terrorist networks.
“Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State,” he said.
The President also expressed appreciation to the United States government for its support, specifically thanking President Donald Trump for his leadership in advancing shared security objectives.
Nigeria, he added, remains committed to strengthening its partnership with international allies in the fight against terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Tinubu further assured that more decisive operations would be carried out to eliminate terrorist enclaves across the country.
Security analysts say the development marks a significant boost to ongoing efforts to restore stability in the Lake Chad Basin and curb insurgent activities in the region.
