The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has clarified that its petrol discount initiative is designed to provide relief to Nigerians amid rising fuel prices and does not amount to a return of petroleum subsidy.
The company said the discount, initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, would continue until October 31, 2026, across NNPC Retail stations nationwide.
In a statement on Friday, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said the initiative was part of efforts to cushion the impact of elevated global crude oil prices arising from the conflict in the Middle East.
The clarification followed a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026.
NNPC said it remained committed to working with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to ease the burden of rising petrol prices on households, businesses and the wider economy.
“We recognise that higher petrol prices affect everyday life, from the cost of commuting to the expenses of running a business. We understand the strain on families and livelihoods, and this discount is intended to provide direct relief to customers during this difficult period,” Odeh said.
The company stressed that the initiative was strictly a customer relief measure and should not be interpreted as a reintroduction of petroleum subsidy.
Discount Applies to NNPC Retail Outlets
NNPC further explained that the discount applied only to its retail outlets and did not establish a uniform pump price nationwide.
It also maintained that the initiative did not alter the market-based pricing framework governing petroleum products.
According to the company, the measure supports the Federal Government’s efforts to provide practical relief to Nigerians amid uncertainty in the global oil market.
“NNPC Limited remains committed to reliable product supply and collaboration with the government and stakeholders to help ease the burden on Nigerians. We therefore urge the public to disregard any interpretation of this discount as a subsidy restoration,” the statement said.
The company added that it would continue to prioritise reliable fuel supply and responsible customer service while maintaining commercially responsible operations.
It also pledged to provide clear information on the scope and duration of its customer initiatives to enable Nigerians to make informed purchasing decisions.
NNPC thanked Nigerians for their continued patronage and assured the public of its commitment to transparent communication on its products, prices and customer relief programmes.
