NUPRC, NRS Deepen Ties to Boost Oil Revenue Collection, Transparency

Abuja, Nigeria — June 17, 2026 — The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) have strengthened their partnership to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the collection of oil and gas revenues.

The resolution followed a high-level meeting between the Commission Chief Executive of NUPRC, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, and the Chairman of the NRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, held at the NRS headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking during the meeting, Eyesan commended the leadership of the NRS for ongoing reforms, particularly those leading to the enactment of the NRS Act, which has reshaped revenue collection processes in the country. She noted that the transition of revenue collection responsibilities to the NRS had been smooth and without disruption.

Eyesan reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to creating a conducive operating environment for oil and gas companies, stressing that growth in the sector would translate into broader economic benefits.

According to her, Nigeria is gradually ramping up oil production, with output reaching 1.86 million barrels per day in May and a potential to hit 1.9 million barrels per day.

“We are focused on enabling operators to succeed because when the industry grows, the entire country benefits,” she said.

She, however, acknowledged persistent challenges, including infrastructure deficits and asset integrity concerns, as well as the need to strengthen human capacity within the sector to sustain growth.

The NUPRC boss also highlighted the Commission’s push toward digital transformation, revealing that most of its operational processes have now been digitised to improve efficiency and transparency.

In his remarks, Adedeji praised the Commission for its professionalism and commitment to transparency, pledging continued collaboration, especially in implementing provisions of the new revenue framework.

“It is in the interest of Nigeria that we work together to grow revenue in a transparent and sustainable manner,” he said.

Clarifying the role of the NRS, Adedeji noted that the agency focuses on revenue collection rather than generation, working closely with institutions like the NUPRC to ensure proper accounting and remittance of funds.

He assured that the Service would continue to support the Commission in achieving shared goals of boosting government revenue while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The renewed collaboration between both agencies is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal position, particularly in the oil and gas sector, which remains a major source of national revenue.
