ABUJA — Nigeria’s Armed Forces and top security chiefs have received fresh commendations following the successful rescue of 44 abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State.
The Coalition of Civil Rights Groups on Security Sector Reforms (CCRGSR), which gave the commendation on Monday in Abuja, particularly lauded the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, for effective coordination of the joint operation that led to the victims’ safe return after their abduction in May.
Addressing journalists, the coalition’s spokesperson, Emmanuel Agabi, described the rescue as a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity, noting that it showcased improved collaboration among security agencies.
“We gather not merely to acknowledge an isolated incident, but to recognise a significant milestone in the fight against insecurity,” Agabi said.
He explained that the operation, conducted in difficult forest terrain, demonstrated growing synergy among the Army, Navy, Air Force, intelligence agencies and other security institutions under a coordinated command structure.
The coalition also commended the Nigeria Police Force for its role in providing ground support, conducting investigations and engaging local communities during the rescue mission.
Agabi noted that similar security operations across the country have led to the rescue of hostages, recovery of arms and disruption of criminal networks, indicating steady progress in restoring peace.
While praising the achievements, the group urged the Federal Government to sustain reforms by investing in modern equipment, intelligence gathering, training and stronger civil-military relations.
It also called for expanded community policing and enhanced efforts to address insecurity in vulnerable and ungoverned areas.
The coalition further applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting security agencies through improved funding and inter-agency cooperation, while paying tribute to personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
