PDP Crisis: BoT, Caretaker Chair Push Unity, Congresses, National Convention

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have moved to resolve the party’s lingering internal crisis, pledging unity, respect for court rulings and early conduct of outstanding congresses.

At the 85th meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja, the Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said the party had reached a critical stage where wisdom, restraint and strict adherence to the rule of law must override personal ambitions.

Ohuabunwa said the PDP survived recent leadership disputes and legal battles because of its strong institutions and commitment to constitutional order.

He defended the delay in holding party congresses, describing it as a deliberate decision taken to respect pending court cases.

“The delay was not an abdication of responsibility but an act of institutional caution,” he said.

The BoT chairman welcomed the Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan, which affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee, urging party members to obey court decisions.

He warned against divisive rhetoric and actions capable of further weakening the party, stressing that unity was essential for its survival.

In his remarks, the National Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, thanked members of the BoT for their support, saying it had strengthened the committee at a defining moment.

Mohammed also expressed gratitude to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for standing by the caretaker leadership.

He said the festive season was over and that the time had come to focus on the committee’s mandate of repositioning the party.

The caretaker chairman confirmed that the Ibadan High Court had delivered a declaratory judgment in favour of the committee, describing the ruling as clear and unambiguous.

“Any moment from now, we will roll out a timetable for outstanding congresses in some states that will lead to a seamless national convention,” he said.

Mohammed described the PDP as a party built around the people, with nationwide structures and verifiable legacies, warning that the party could not afford complacency.

Both leaders expressed confidence that reconciliation, congresses and a credible national convention would restore stability and reposition the PDP as a strong opposition party.
