The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) that a power outage in parts of the Federal Capital Territory was caused by maintenance work at the Apo 132kV Transmission Substation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN clarified that no maintenance activity was carried out at the Apo substation on May 5, 2026, contrary to AEDC’s public notice.
The company explained that the maintenance on the affected 100MVA transformer, identified as TR3, had already been completed on April 30, 2026, after the equipment was temporarily shut down on emergency grounds due to arcing observed on the transformer bushing.
“TCN states categorically that no maintenance activity was carried out at its Apo 132kV Transmission Substation, contrary to the statement issued by AEDC,” the statement said.
According to TCN, the repair works on the transformer were successfully concluded days earlier, stressing that the outage experienced by customers in the affected areas could not be linked to its operations.
“The maintenance on the referenced 100MVA (TR3) transformer was successfully completed earlier on 30th April 2026,” the company stated.
TCN added that the transformer was initially taken offline as a precautionary measure following the technical fault but had since been restored after repairs were completed.
The company maintained that it remains committed to transparency, operational efficiency and continuous improvement of the nation’s transmission infrastructure.
The clarification follows public notices by AEDC informing customers in parts of Abuja about disruptions allegedly tied to maintenance activities at the Apo transmission facility.
