Power sector stakeholders, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), have begun fresh efforts to address persistent operational challenges affecting electricity supply in Kano and surrounding areas.
At an interface meeting held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at TCN’s Regional Office in Kano, the agencies reviewed ongoing issues within the power network, with particular focus on the increasing cases of 33kV feeder trippings and their impact on service delivery.
The meeting also assessed progress made from previous engagements, as stakeholders sought practical and lasting solutions to improve grid stability and efficiency across the region.
Speaking during the session, the General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M.K. Bello, stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among key players in the electricity value chain.
He noted that regular interface meetings would enhance communication, strengthen coordination, and ultimately improve operational efficiency within the power sector.
A detailed presentation by the Regional Operations Manager of NISO highlighted incidents of feeder trippings recorded between January and March 2026, outlining critical operational concerns responsible for recurring system disturbances.
The report formed the basis for deliberations, with participants exploring strategies to reduce outages and stabilise electricity supply in the region.
Responding to the concerns raised, the KEDCO delegation, led by Engr. Sabi’u Haruna, acknowledged the reported tripping incidents and pledged to intensify efforts to improve operational performance.
Haruna assured stakeholders that the company would strengthen its response mechanisms and work closely with other sector players to minimise disruptions and enhance service delivery to customers.
The meeting underscores renewed commitment by power sector operators to tackle technical challenges and ensure more reliable electricity supply in Kano and its environs.
