…Five suspects arrested over Cape Town incident
South African police have arrested five suspects, including two women, over the alleged kidnapping and rape of a 25-year-old e-hailing driver in Cape Town.
The South African Police Service disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X account on Sunday.
According to the police, the victim was rescued after being held captive and subjected to sexual assault by two female suspects and three male accomplices.
“Steenberg police rescued a 25-year-old e-hailing driver after he was raped and held at ransom by two female suspects and three males yesterday,” the police said.
The incident reportedly came to light after the victim’s brother alerted the police when the suspects contacted him and demanded R4,000 for the driver’s release.
Police said the victim was subsequently located through a vehicle tracker.
“They located the victim through his vehicle tracker and found him at Southampton Road in Heathfield,” the statement added.
The police said the victim had met one of the female suspects the previous week through his e-hailing business.
According to the statement, the pair exchanged telephone numbers and remained in communication throughout the week before arranging to meet.
However, when the driver went to meet the woman, he was allegedly kidnapped by the suspects and subsequently sexually assaulted by the two women.
The suspects arrested in connection with the incident comprise two women, aged 23 and 34, and three men aged 16, 42 and 48.
The police said all five suspects had been arrested and would appear before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 14.
The investigation is ongoing as the suspects face charges relating to the alleged kidnapping, rape and ransom demand.
