LAGOS, Nigeria — WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has graduated the first cohort of its EngineerHer programme, with several participants securing jobs and academic opportunities even before completing the one-year initiative.
The programme, launched in 2025, is aimed at boosting female representation in the maritime and logistics sector while building a pipeline of skilled Nigerian engineers through technical training, mentorship and hands-on experience.
Out of the eight participants selected for the pioneer cohort, two secured employment and scholarship placements before completion, while six completed the programme and graduated, with some already appointed into full-time roles at WACT.
“WACT EngineerHer programme was launched with a clear ambition—to increase female representation and empower Nigerian women with the technical skills and competitive advantage needed to thrive,” said Chinelo Obienyem, Senior People Business Partner at WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria.
She added that the initiative is already delivering measurable impact, noting that “participants secured roles and scholarships using this platform, and some are stepping into substantive roles within WACT.”
Participants described the programme as transformative. One of the graduates, Helen Clinton Okpoo, said, “I can now navigate the engineering profession with greater confidence and competence.”
Another participant, Margaret Jiji Seignure, highlighted the inclusive nature of the initiative, stating, “Being part of a company that actively supports female growth and inclusion is premium.”
The EngineerHer initiative combines structured mentorship, industry exposure and practical training to prepare women for operational roles in the maritime sector, where female participation has historically been low.
WACT confirmed that a second cohort has already commenced as of July 1, 2026, with plans to expand the programme’s reach and impact.
The company said the initiative underscores its commitment to developing local talent and fostering a more inclusive workforce in Nigeria’s engineering and logistics industries.
