10-Man England Edge Mexico 3-2 to Reach Quarterfinals

MEXICO CITY — England produced a dramatic display of resilience to defeat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 at the Estadio Azteca, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals despite playing much of the match with ten men.

Jude Bellingham inspired the victory with a rapid first-half brace, scoring twice in just 98 seconds to put England firmly in control before halftime.

“It was a tough game, especially after going down to ten men, but the team showed great character,” England manager Gareth Southgate said after the match.

Harry Kane extended England’s lead from the penalty spot in the 60th minute, restoring a two-goal cushion after Mexico had pulled one back through Julián Quiñones late in the first half.

The game took a decisive turn when defender Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review, forcing England to defend deep against sustained pressure from the hosts.

Mexico responded with intensity, and Raúl Jiménez converted a second-half penalty to reduce the deficit to 3-2, setting up a tense finale in front of a passionate home crowd.

“We pushed until the end, but it was not enough,” a disappointed Mexico player said, reflecting the mood of the hosts after the final whistle.

Despite more than 13 minutes of stoppage time and several late chances, Mexico were unable to find an equaliser, as England held firm to secure a historic win.

The result marks the first time England have defeated Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in a World Cup fixture, ending the hosts’ strong record at the venue.

Bellingham was named Man of the Match for his decisive performance, which set the tone for England’s progression to the last eight.

With the victory, England will face Norway in the quarterfinals, while Mexico exit the tournament after a spirited campaign on home soil.

The match is already being regarded as one of the standout encounters of the tournament, highlighting both England’s resilience and Mexico’s fighting spirit.
