The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has welcomed the G100 Alliance’s efforts to produce a consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election, but insisted that his party is primarily focused on winning the poll.
Dickson said the NDC was aware of the group’s consultations and, in principle, supported its efforts to unite opposition forces ahead of the election.
The former Bayelsa State governor stated this on Wednesday while appearing as a guest on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.
According to him, the G100 initiative was a positive development, although the details of how a consensus candidate would emerge remained important.
“My friends who are organising the G100 came to see me, Saliu and his people. They are great Nigerians doing a great job, and their thinking is not misplaced.
“The NDC is aware of the moves and the efforts they are making. The NDC, in principle, endorses what they are doing,” Dickson said.
He, however, made it clear that the NDC had already settled its presidential ticket and was preparing to take its message to Nigerians across the country and in the diaspora.
Dickson described the NDC ticket as “the most exciting,” “vibrant,” “appealing” and “balanced”, saying the party believed it had a strong ticket capable of resonating with Nigerians.
“We have the most exciting ticket. We have the most vibrant ticket. We have an appealing ticket. We have a balanced ticket. We have a ticket that resonates with the Nigerian people at home and abroad.
“We are the strongest ticket, and I believe that they know that. I believe that every Nigerian knows it. And this is without any form of disrespect or dishonour to any other candidate or any other party,” he stated.
The NDC leader said the party remained open to working with other opposition parties and political groups, including those willing to support its presidential ticket.
He stressed, however, that the party would enter the 2027 election as the NDC and would not abandon its ambition of winning the presidency.
“Therefore, we remain committed to working with everybody. In principle, no problem, but we are going into the election as NDC.
“If other parties and candidates support us, which we think they should do, well and good. But we are working to win the election,” Dickson said.
He added that the NDC would welcome any decision by other political groups to endorse its ticket in the interest of producing what he described as a victory for Nigerians.
The G100 Alliance recently brought opposition leaders and representatives of six political parties together at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for discussions on cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative is part of broader efforts among opposition groups to forge a common front and build a stronger political force capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, President Bola Tinubu, in the 2027 election.
