Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has boasted that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will spring a big surprise on Nigerians in the 2027 general elections, even as he insisted that the party’s National Convention will go ahead as planned despite lingering internal wrangling.
Wike, who spoke after inspecting the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja — venue of the March 29 and 30 convention — dismissed fears that the crisis rocking the party could derail the exercise.
He also waved aside the appeal filed at the Supreme Court by a faction loyal to Tanimu Turaki, declaring that it has no bearing on the planned convention.
According to him, reconciliation moves within the party will not stop with the convention, stressing that efforts to bring back aggrieved members will continue.
“The PDP is a big family. The umbrella is wide enough to carry everybody,” Wike said.
“In any organisation, there must be grievances. Even in a small family, not everyone will be happy. What is important is that we are ready to sit down with those who are not satisfied and resolve issues in the interest of the party.”
The former Rivers State governor, who was joined by top party leaders including ex-Abia governor Okezie Ikpeazu and members of the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), maintained that the convention would signal a new beginning for the PDP.
He disclosed that zoning of key positions has already been concluded, with the presidency ceded to the South and the national chairmanship to the North, describing the move as a major step towards unity.
“For once, we are not talking about any so-called unity list that divides us. Everybody is on the same page,” he said.
On readiness, Wike expressed confidence that all arrangements have been firmed up for a hitch-free convention.
“We are about 95 per cent ready. By tomorrow, everything will be set. Seating for all states has been arranged and even the VIP section is ready. We are expecting about 2,500 delegates,” he added.
The convention is expected to hold in Abuja on Sunday and Monday.
