The Federal Government says 97 percent of ambassadors appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been accepted by their host countries, signaling steady progress in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements.
The disclosure was contained in a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in Abuja on August 1, 2026, confirming that 65 out of the 69 ambassadors-designate have successfully received agrément—the formal consent of receiving states in line with international diplomatic practice.
“The diplomatic process of seeking and obtaining agrément is progressing smoothly and successfully,” the ministry said.
According to the ministry, the remaining cases are linked to specific developments, including the withdrawal of an ambassador-designate to the Republic of Togo, who declined the appointment and requested that her agrément not be processed.
It also confirmed that the ambassador-designate to Algeria died in April 2026, with a replacement process currently underway.
The ministry added that only two countries are yet to communicate formal acceptance, although assurances have been received that approvals will be granted in due course.
It further stated that the majority of the confirmed ambassadors have already arrived in their host countries and presented their Letters of Credence, officially commencing their duties as Nigeria’s principal envoys.
Reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, the ministry said it remains actively engaging relevant authorities to conclude the outstanding processes and strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation globally.
