Nigeria Secures World Championship Relay Spot as Mixed Team Qualifies in Gaborone

ABUJA — Team Nigeria has secured qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing after its mixed relay team delivered a decisive performance at the ongoing World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.

The quartet of Favou Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson combined effectively in the mixed 4x100m relay to book Nigeria’s place at next year’s global event in China.

Their qualification comes through the World Relays — the official pathway for relay teams to the World Championships — where the top-performing nations across heats and repechage rounds earn automatic slots. The Gaborone meet, running from May 2 to May 3, has attracted leading athletics nations competing for limited qualification places.

Nigeria’s mixed relay team executed clean baton exchanges and maintained competitive pace across all legs, a notable improvement in a discipline where technical errors have previously affected the country’s chances on the global stage.

The team’s composition reflects Nigeria’s blend of sprinting depth across both male and female athletes. Favou Ashe, one of Nigeria’s leading male sprinters, brought experience and speed to the opening leg, while Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi and Chidera Ezeakor sustained momentum through the middle phases. Maria Thompson anchored the team, ensuring a strong finish against a competitive field.

For Nigeria, relay qualification is increasingly about execution as much as talent. The clean delivery in Gaborone suggests a shift toward better technical preparation — a critical factor if the country is to convert qualification into podium contention on the global stage.

The qualification provides a boost for Nigeria’s athletics programme, particularly after recent inconsistencies in relay events due to disqualifications and baton exchange errors. Securing early qualification also allows the team additional time to refine combinations and build cohesion ahead of Beijing 2027.

The World Athletics Championships remain one of the sport’s premier competitions outside the Olympic Games, featuring the best athletes from across the globe. For Nigeria, relay events have historically offered strong medal prospects when execution aligns with individual sprinting ability.

Officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have consistently identified relay events as a priority area, given the country’s depth in sprinting talent. The latest result reinforces that strategy, with the mixed relay emerging as a viable medal opportunity.
