The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam in Anambra State, has dismissed four lecturers and an examinations officer over allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion, and other forms of misconduct.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the university’s spokesperson, Harrison Madubueze, the decision was taken during the institution’s 122nd Governing Council meeting held on June 12.
The university stated that the affected staff members were found culpable following investigations into allegations involving professional misconduct and abuse of office. The disciplinary action, according to the statement, reflects the institution’s zero-tolerance stance on unethical behaviour within the academic environment.
The dismissed staff include four lecturers and one examinations officer accused of engaging in various forms of misconduct, including sexual harassment, intimidation of students, and extortion. The university did not provide detailed identities of those involved but confirmed that due process was followed before the final decision was reached.
COOU emphasized that the Governing Council acted in line with the institution’s regulations governing staff conduct, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining academic integrity and safeguarding students from abuse and exploitation.
The statement further noted that the university will continue to strengthen internal monitoring mechanisms to ensure that cases of misconduct are promptly investigated and appropriately sanctioned.
The development comes amid growing scrutiny of sexual harassment and corruption-related issues within higher education institutions in Nigeria, with regulatory bodies and stakeholders increasingly calling for stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures.
University authorities said the action is part of ongoing reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the institution and ensuring a safe learning environment for students.
COOU reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline, accountability, and ethical standards across all academic and administrative operations.
