The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 41-year-old Brazil-based Nigerian businessman, Ikechukwu Abugu Oliver, over the alleged importation of 6.10 kilogrammes of liquid cocaine concealed in clothing items into Nigeria.
According to information released by the NDLEA, the suspect was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos upon arrival from Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The agency stated that the suspect’s luggage was subjected to a detailed search, during which officers reportedly discovered 14 shirts and towels packed inside the bag. The items were allegedly soaked in liquid cocaine, dried, and neatly ironed to avoid detection.
NDLEA officials described the concealment method as a sophisticated attempt to smuggle narcotics through passenger luggage, adding that the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to intercept drug trafficking operations through Nigeria’s international entry points.
The suspect, identified as Ikechukwu Abugu Oliver, is said to be a native of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area in Enugu State. He reportedly told investigators that he had lived in Brazil for over 14 years, where he claimed to operate an African restaurant business.
The NDLEA confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the trafficking network behind the shipment, including possible collaborators both within and outside Nigeria.
Authorities noted that the arrest reflects continued surveillance and intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling international drug trafficking routes involving Nigerian airports.
The agency has intensified airport monitoring in recent times, particularly on routes linked to South America, which has been identified as a major source region for cocaine shipments destined for West Africa and Europe.
Officials added that the suspect remains in custody and will face further interrogation as investigators work to trace the origin and intended distribution channels of the seized narcotics.
The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on drug trafficking networks and preventing the entry of illicit substances into Nigeria through coordinated enforcement operations.
