AKURE, August 17, 2026 — Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved an immediate 60 per cent increase in the monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions in the state, alongside the implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and university unions.
The approvals, which take effect from this month, are aimed at strengthening the institutions’ capacity to meet their financial obligations, improve staff welfare and enhance the learning environment for students and academic staff.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, and made available to journalists on Monday.
According to the statement, the increased subventions are expected to enable the affected institutions to meet their obligations more effectively, including ensuring prompt payment of salaries and addressing long-standing welfare concerns.
The governor also approved the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and the unions of universities, although the statement did not provide details of the specific provisions being implemented.
The approvals cover all relevant state-owned tertiary institutions in Ondo State and are intended to strengthen their operations while bringing them closer to national standards.
Aiyedatiwa directed the managements of the affected institutions to ensure that the additional funding is used judiciously, with priority given to staff welfare and academic excellence.
The governor also appealed to workers and their unions to reciprocate the government’s decision by maintaining industrial harmony and focusing on the delivery of quality education to students.
«“Our administration remains committed to making Ondo State a hub for quality tertiary education and will continue to take bold steps to support our institutions,” Aiyedatiwa said.»
The state government said the measures are part of efforts to improve the standard of tertiary education in Ondo State and strengthen the welfare of workers across the institutions.
