Ibadan, Nigeria — The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to troops’ welfare with the commissioning of a newly renovated 81 Battalion Headquarters and Commanding Officer’s residence at the Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola Barracks, Ibadan.
The facilities were inaugurated on Tuesday by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, on behalf of the COAS.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nnebeife said the projects were part of ongoing efforts to improve soldiers’ welfare, operational efficiency and administrative effectiveness across Nigerian Army formations.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the COAS’s “Soldiers First” philosophy, which prioritises the well-being of personnel and their families as a key driver of operational readiness.
“The renovated Battalion Headquarters will enhance command and administrative operations, while the upgraded residence will improve the welfare and comfort of the Commanding Officer and his family,” he said.
Nnebeife added that quality infrastructure remains essential to boosting morale, productivity and combat readiness within the military, urging personnel to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.
He also commended the outgoing Commanding Officer of the Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Agaku, for initiating and delivering the project, describing it as a reflection of professional leadership and dedication.
Earlier, Lt. Col. Agaku said the renovation became necessary after an assessment of the battalion’s infrastructure upon his assumption of command in February 2025.
According to him, work began on February 17, 2025 and was completed on May 15, 2026, covering extensive structural rehabilitation, roofing, electrical and plumbing upgrades, office reconfiguration, painting and environmental improvements.
“A motivated soldier is a productive soldier,” Agaku said, adding that the project was driven by the Army’s welfare-oriented leadership philosophy.
He explained that the renovation was aimed at improving working conditions, boosting morale and strengthening operational effectiveness within the battalion.
Project supervisor and Battalion Adjutant, Capt. Femi Emmanuel Ajia, said the execution followed strict supervision, planning and quality control to ensure high standards.
He noted that the upgraded headquarters now features 12 offices, a conference room, modern workspaces, air-conditioning units, a car park and improved administrative facilities.
The Commanding Officer’s residence was also upgraded with enhanced security features, perimeter fencing, a gatehouse, paved driveways, and modern living amenities.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior military officers, commanders, personnel, their families and invited guests.
