PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate dismantling of an illegal police roadblock after confronting officers during an inspection tour, in a move reinforcing the nationwide ban on unauthorised checkpoints.
The incident, captured in a viral video on Monday, occurred along major routes including the East-West Road corridor and the Rivers–Imo boundary, where the CP spotted officers obstructing traffic in violation of directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, prohibiting illegal roadblocks and extortion.
Visibly displeased, Adepoju challenged the officers on duty, asking: “Why are you blocking the road? You didn’t hear the directive that no police officer should block the road anymore for any reason?”
He further demanded their identities, insisting on accountability and professionalism, and directed that the roadblock be cleared immediately.
The police chief warned that officers found violating operational guidelines — including those engaging in extortion, improper dressing, or lacking visible name tags — would face disciplinary action.
The inspection forms part of a broader enforcement drive aimed at improving police conduct, easing traffic congestion, and restoring public trust. According to Adepoju, compliance levels have improved significantly, particularly along the Rivers–Imo boundary, with fewer unauthorised checkpoints observed.
“Our goal is to ensure professional stop-and-search operations without disrupting traffic or harassing motorists,” the CP stated during the exercise.
Adepoju, who assumed office in January 2025, has intensified reforms within the command in line with directives from the police high command to eliminate practices that undermine public confidence.
The viral footage has drawn widespread reactions, with many Nigerians praising the CP’s hands-on approach and commitment to accountability, while others expressed cautious optimism about sustained enforcement.
Security analysts say consistent monitoring and enforcement will be key to achieving long-term compliance across the state.
