The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has airlifted the first batch of Nigerian troops to Guinea-Bissau under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission (ESSMGB), reinforcing Nigeria’s leadership in regional peacekeeping and security operations.
The contingent, deployed as part of NIGCOY 5, comprises 86 personnel—12 officers and 74 soldiers—who departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a NAF C-130 aircraft. Military authorities confirmed that additional personnel will follow in subsequent airlift operations.
According to a statement, the troops were formally seen off at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Force Operations Base in Abuja, where they were urged to uphold professionalism, discipline, and integrity throughout the mission. Officials emphasized that the deployed personnel are expected to represent Nigeria with distinction while contributing to stability in Guinea-Bissau.
“The deployment underscores the seamless synergy among the Services of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s enduring strategic airlift capability in support of national and multinational operations,” the statement said.
The operation further demonstrates Nigeria’s continued commitment to ECOWAS peace support initiatives and its broader role in promoting regional security and international cooperation. Analysts note that Nigeria has consistently played a leading role in West African peacekeeping missions, leveraging its military capacity and diplomatic influence.
The ESSMGB mission is aimed at maintaining stability in Guinea-Bissau, a country that has experienced recurring political tensions, with ECOWAS member states contributing troops and resources to support democratic governance and security.
