Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has formally launched the Ogun State chapter of the Iru Ekun Security Network, with volunteers expected to undergo training and operate in collaboration with government authorities.
The launch, held on Wednesday, attracted a large crowd of supporters, with many participants dressed in matching black outfits and caps.
Speaking at the event, Igboho charged members of the security outfit to maintain discipline and avoid using their positions to engage in reckless or unlawful conduct.
“You must have discipline. Do not engage in reckless behaviour or ruin things just because they have trained you and you have ID card,” he warned.
Igboho said the Federal Government would determine the trainers for the organisation, while the Ogun State Government would decide where members would be deployed.
According to him, successful participants would receive identification cards at the local government level after completing their training.
“Federal Government will decide who will come and train us. The Governor’s Office will tell us where they will place us,” he said.
The activist also disclosed that the Ogun State Government had assured the group of its support, including the possibility of monthly allowances for members.
“The Governor has also given us assurance. They have given us support here, and they will decide what monthly allowance to provide to us, to support us, because we have wives, and we have children,” Igboho stated.
He said the long-term objective was to establish a properly identified and organised security network across the South-West, enabling members to work legitimately while supporting efforts to maintain peace and protect communities.
Igboho likened the initiative to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, recalling how the organisation developed from its early community-based structure into a nationwide security agency.
Iru Ekun, meaning “leopard’s tail” in Yoruba, is a community-based security initiative founded by Igboho to complement efforts to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other forms of crime in the South-West.
The Ogun chapter is part of efforts to expand the network across the region.
