President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s maritime industry into a stronger contributor to the nation’s economy and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Tinubu stated this when he received the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, at the State House, Abuja, where they discussed developments and challenges confronting the country’s maritime sector.
The President said the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy was a deliberate policy decision aimed at unlocking the enormous economic potential of Nigeria’s maritime resources and ensuring that the sector plays a more significant role in national development.
He stressed the need for sustained efforts to develop the industry, improve its contribution to the economy and maximise opportunities within the country’s vast maritime space.
During the meeting, Mobereola briefed the President on developments at NIMASA over the past two years, outlining progress recorded by the agency as well as challenges affecting the growth of the maritime industry.
The NIMASA Director-General also highlighted key areas requiring continued government attention to strengthen the agency’s operations and improve the overall performance of the sector.
Tinubu commended NIMASA for the progress recorded under its current leadership and urged the agency to sustain the momentum.
He charged Mobereola and his management team to remain focused and committed to delivering on the agency’s mandate, stressing the importance of continuous improvement in the maritime sector.
The President’s renewed commitment is expected to further strengthen ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to position Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy as a major driver of economic growth, investment and national development.
