Six Parties Begin Fresh Push for Cooperation Ahead of General Elections
Opposition leaders have intensified moves to forge a common front ahead of the 2027 general elections, with six political parties engaging presidential candidates from five parties in fresh consultations aimed at strengthening cooperation and coordinating their electoral strategy.
The consultations are designed to translate resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit into concrete steps towards collaboration among opposition parties ahead of the polls.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the discussions are part of ongoing efforts to establish a framework for cooperation and identify areas of common interest among the participating political groups.
The six parties involved are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
The presidential candidates participating in the consultations include former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Prince Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP.
The statement said the engagement was aimed at advancing strategic deliberations on how opposition parties could work together on issues affecting the country and the credibility of the electoral process.
It added that the meetings provided an opportunity for party leaders and presidential candidates to explore practical ways of strengthening cooperation ahead of the elections.
According to the coalition, the consultations reflect a commitment to sustained dialogue and a shared understanding that Nigeria’s challenges require serious engagement among political leaders across party lines.
The group stressed that Nigerians deserved political leaders willing to prioritise the country’s future, citizens’ welfare and credible elections over narrow partisan interests.
It said the discussions remained ongoing, with further engagements expected to build on the resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit.
However, the coalition did not disclose whether the consultations had produced an agreement on a joint presidential candidate or any specific electoral arrangement among the participating parties.
It assured Nigerians that substantive decisions and agreed next steps would be communicated as the discussions progressed.
The latest development underscores continuing efforts by opposition parties to explore possible areas of cooperation as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
