The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a fresh attack on former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, questioning his suitability for the 2027 vice-presidential contest following his reported comments about his inability to afford medication for his late mother.
The APC, however, expressed condolences to Amaechi over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, before turning its attention to what it described as the former governor’s “uncanny confessions” about his financial situation since leaving public office.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and wished Amaechi good health.
But Morka said Amaechi’s reported financial struggles had raised questions about his ability to survive outside government.
Amaechi, who served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of the state and later Minister of Transportation, is now the ADC vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The APC spokesman recalled an earlier comment allegedly made by Amaechi that he had become so financially constrained that his wife was feeding him.
According to Morka, Amaechi’s latest claim concerning his inability to afford medication for his mother had further raised questions about his financial circumstances.
“Rotimi Amaechi’s uncanny confessions must not be missed. First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89,” Morka said.
The APC further questioned whether Amaechi’s years in public office had left him overly dependent on government positions for his livelihood.
The party argued that the former governor’s reported financial difficulties outside government raised concerns about his suitability for the office of vice-president.
Morka said the presidency was not meant to serve as a means of providing personal financial security.
“The presidency is not a soup kitchen, and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” he said.
The APC concluded that Amaechi’s own public statements, rather than the ruling party’s criticism, provided the basis for questioning his readiness for the 2027 vice-presidential race.
“There can be no better speaker of Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of vice president than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” Morka added.
