The wife of the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Titi Abubakar, has said her husband is not seeking Nigeria’s presidency to amass wealth, but to give back to society.
Titi, who spoke while campaigning for the former Vice-President at a rally, described Atiku as an experienced politician, philanthropist and administrator who would not need to learn on the job if elected president in 2027.
She said her husband had acquired sufficient experience in public service and was determined to use it to contribute to the development of the country.
“Atiku is a sellable material. That is why I’m so proud of my husband. Atiku is a philanthropist. Atiku has done it before. Atiku is not going to learn on the job, and Atiku is not a novice,” she said.
The ADC chieftain’s wife also dismissed questions about why Atiku, who is approaching 80, is still seeking the presidency, insisting that his motivation was service rather than personal enrichment.
“Atiku doesn’t want Nigerians’ money. Atiku just wants to give back to society what the society has done for him. Because many people keep saying, what is he looking for? Very soon, he’s going to be 80,” she said.
Titi further said Atiku intended to mentor younger Nigerians and prepare the next generation of leaders during his administration.
According to her, although Atiku may initially serve for only one term, Nigerians could eventually persuade him to seek a second term because of his performance.
She said the former Vice-President would also groom his deputy to eventually succeed him after completing his tenure.
“By the grace of God, when Atiku comes to this table, I told you, people will yearn that Atiku should continue and do a second time. By then, he will have tutored his deputy. Maybe the deputy will take over from him,” she said.
Titi expressed concern over the state of the Nigerian economy, alleging that the country was facing serious governance and economic challenges.
“Now, today, we have no constitution. We have no rule of law. Nothing is working. Our economy is in shambles. And I wonder how people are living. I wonder how people are eating,” she said.
She urged Nigerians to support her husband, arguing that his experience in governance would be an advantage if he emerged victorious in the 2027 presidential election.
The former Vice-President is among the political figures positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential contest under the ADC platform.
