Defence Minister Inaugurates Defence College Advisory Council

The Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar has inaugurated the National Defence College Advisory Council for the growth and development of the college.

This was contained in a statement signed by Henshaw Ogubike Director (Press & Public Relations), Ministry of Defence.

While inaugurating the Council at National Defence College, Abuja, the Minister charged members of the Council to make the best use of the opportunity to contribute their quota to the growth of the college.

Badaru hinted that the council was first of its kind in the over three decades of the College’s history.

He pointed out the importance of the Council saying: ” Advisory Council plays crucial roles in the growth and development of institutions.”

Speaking to all the members, he said: “Distinguished Chairman and members of this Council, your acceptance to serve this great Institution once again is highly appreciated and commendable. There is no doubt that your wealth of knowledge and experience would be needed at this critical time in the history of the College.”

He commended the College Commandant, Rear Admiral ON Olotu for his vision and foresight in establishing the Advisory Council.

The Minister also appreciated the Chairman, Rear Admiral AG Adedeji (Rtd) and other members of the Advisory Council who are past Commandants of the College for accepting to serve the institution they once led and cherished.

Badaru reassured the Commandant of the College that the Ministry of Defence will continue to support the College in fulfilling its mandates.

Earlier, while presenting his welcome address, the Commandant of NDC, Rear Admiral Olotu said that the inauguration of the National Defence College Advisory Council was aimed at sustaining institutional memory and to continuously tap from the experiences of the Colleges’ past leadership.

The Chairman of the Advisory Council, Rear Admiral Adedeji (Rtd) thanked the Minister for bestowing the responsibility to serve and promised to bring in their experiences and meet the global best practices.

Federal Government Warns Mining Firms on Compliance with Community Development Agreements

Alake disclosed the government’s exploration ambitions, including an integrated minerals exploration project covering the entire Nigerian landscape. He emphasized the commitment to improve security around mining sites, citing the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister outlined steps taken to enhance the ease of doing business in the mining sector, such as digitizing the mining application processes through the Electronic Mining Cadastral System (eMC+). He assured ongoing efforts to update the Nigerian Mining and Minerals Act 2007 to align with national priorities.

Issuing a clear directive to mining companies, Alake announced the end of an era for disregarding revised guidelines for Community Development Agreements. He emphasized the government’s readiness to enforce compliance and mete out sanctions to defaulters.

Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation Celebrates Success of WISH Project, Empowering Women and Girls

Lucky Palmer, the Country Director of Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation, disclosed concerning rates of sexual violence in Nigeria during the One-day Women Integrated Services for Health (WISH) Project Dissemination Meeting in Abuja. Palmer noted that 3 out of 4 women and girls have experienced sexual violence, underscoring the urgency for intervention.

The WISH project, implemented over the past five years, focused on improving government policies, regulations, and laws to prevent sexual and gender-based violence. It provided services like contraception, post-abortion care, therapeutic abortion, and emotional rehabilitation through Sexual Assault Referral Centers (SARC). The project aimed to create a safe environment for women to plan pregnancies, enhance sexual reproductive health, and prevent reproductive coercion.

Despite challenges, such as security concerns limiting outreach in Borno state and the impact of COVID-19, the WISH project witnessed successes. Community and religious leaders, as well as law enforcement officers, became advocates against social norms perpetuating gender-based violence.

As the project concludes, Palmer urged partners to build on its achievements, envisioning a Nigeria free from reproductive coercion, survivor stigmatization, and impunity for perpetrators. He called for a society where every woman can exercise her sexual reproductive health and rights without fear or discrimination.

Dr. Ejike Oji, President/CEO of Dr. Ejike Oji Community Development Foundation, and Chairman of the Association for the Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP), emphasized the need for the federal government to expand Sexual Assault and Referral Centers across the country. He advocated for governmental ownership of these centers and the naming and shaming of perpetrators.

The representative of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mr. Isikong Patricia, expressed the ministry’s commitment to implementing laws and policies addressing health-related matters. The event included partners sharing success stories, celebrating the transformative impact of the WISH project on the sexual reproductive health and rights of Nigerian women, particularly those in Northeast, Northwest, and Benue States.

Reps Charge Army, Police Bosses to Deploy More Men to Plateau, Ekiti States

The Nigeria’s House of Representatives issued a call on Tuesday urging the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and heads of other security agencies to deploy additional personnel to troubled areas in Plateau and Ekiti States. This move aims to stem the tide of killings in these regions.

The resolution came following the adoption of motions of urgent public importance presented by Ishaya Lalu and Akin Rotimi, members representing Bokkos/Mangu and Ikole/Oye Federal Constituencies of Plateau and Ekiti States, respectively.

Highlighting the urgent need for action, Lalu, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on House Services, recalled the recent attacks in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in over 50 deaths, injuries, and significant property destruction. The House called for the establishment of a Civilian Joint Task Force in Plateau State and initiated a committee to investigate the causes of the recurring attacks.

Rotimi, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, emotionally led the discussion on the increasing criminal activities in Ikole/Oye Federal Constituency, particularly addressing the loss of lives and properties. He described the constituency as exposed to peculiar security challenges due to its forests, topography, and dilapidated roads.

The House observed a minute of silence in honor of the deceased and urged the Chief of Army Staff to redeploy military forces to the outpost along the Oke-Ako area. Additionally, they directed security agencies to deploy more personnel to Ekiti North 1, work towards bringing the perpetrators to justice, and rescue the abducted school children and teachers in Emure Ekiti. The Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency were also urged to rehabilitate the Ayedun to Irele road and other roads in the Federal Constituency promptly.

In a personally signed statement released in Abuja, Dr. Lake conveyed heartfelt condolences to Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, the government, and people of Ekiti State, as well as the families and subjects of the departed kings. He emphasized the need for urgent attention to the broader issue of insecurity in the nation, asserting the commitment of the President Tinubu-led administration to overcome these challenges.

Dr. Lake strongly condemned the act of violence and urged security agencies to promptly apprehend the assailants, ensuring they face the full consequences of the law. He emphasized the importance of justice being served for this heinous crime. Additionally, he called on the Police high command and the Department of State Security to take immediate action to rescue the kidnapped primary school pupils from Emure-Ekiti.

Acknowledging the challenging time for the people of Ekiti State and all Nigerians, Dr. Lake assured that the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, remains dedicated to tirelessly enhancing the security situation in the country.

Oyo Assembly Takes Swift Action to Address Incessant Attacks

The Oyo State House of Assembly is poised to combat the troubling trend of attacks on innocent citizens, particularly by Fulani herders in Oriire Local Government and other regions of the state. Lawmakers expressed their unanimous commitment to addressing this menace during discussions prompted by a motion sponsored by Hon. Johnson Ogundele, the representative for Oriire State Constituency.

Hon. Ogundele presented the motion, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, citing two recent incidents of attacks and killings by Fulani herders within a nine-day period in Oriire Local Government. Describing the acts as inhumane and barbaric in a civilized society, he highlighted a specific case in Ogbomosho communities where a victim, Mr. Amusa Kareem, had his left hand completely severed by the herders.

In response, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, presiding over the session, asserted the commitment of the House leadership to address the security challenges. He stated the intention to convene discussions to identify parameters for curbing insecurity in the state, emphasizing the need to engage various state and local security agencies, monarchs, farmers, and other relevant bodies in different zones.

The House urged the Ministry of Justice and all security agencies in the state to rigorously enforce the Oyo State Open Rearing and Anti-Grazing Law under Omituntun 2.0. This measure aims to address the menace of attacks and prevent the reoccurrence of such incidents perpetrated by Fulani herders on citizens.

FCT MPWB Initiates Orientation for Intending Pilgrims

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Abuja, is set to commence the first phase of education and orientation for intending pilgrims participating in this year’s Hajj.

Mallam Abubakar Adamu Evuty, the Director of the Board, announced that the orientation sessions are scheduled to take place on February 3rd and 4th, 2024, at the FCT Permanent Hajj camp near the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja. Islamic scholars have been mobilized for this exercise, aiming to equip intending pilgrims for a meaningful and acceptable Hajj experience.

The orientation will comprehensively cover Hajj rites and incorporate insights into new policies introduced by Saudi authorities and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for the upcoming Hajj season.

Director Evuty underscored the significance of educating intending pilgrims, particularly those embarking on the pilgrimage for the first time, about the recent policies implemented by the Saudi Arabian government. He encouraged their active participation in the programs organized by the Board to enhance their Islamic knowledge and ensure a fulfilling Hajj experience.

In addition, Mallam Evuty issued a warning that only intending pilgrims who have deposited a minimum of N4.5 million and above will be shortlisted for this year’s Hajj, in accordance with the registration deadline set by NAHCON. He urged those who are yet to submit completed application forms or international passports to expedite the process to facilitate the timely processing of their travel documents.

NNPC Ltd Woos South Korean Investors for Gas Projects

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has engaged in discussions with a South Korean consortium, led by Daewoo E & C, focused on advancing gas projects in Nigeria. The talks, held in Seoul, South Korea, aim to strengthen NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to harnessing Nigeria’s extensive gas resources to become a major supplier of clean and affordable energy globally.

Recognizing South Korea as a significant destination for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports, the consortium, in collaboration with the Korean Export-Import bank, has shown interest in exploring investments in greenfield projects and other gas development opportunities. The discussions are anticipated to lead to the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), fostering strategic foreign direct investment aligned with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s efforts to position Nigeria as a prime destination for global investors.

Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, highlighted the importance of these talks in unlocking significant foreign investments and promoting Nigeria as a key player in the global energy market.

Simultaneously, the Group Managing Director of NNPC Ltd, Mele Kyari, extended congratulations to Temile Development Company, an indigenous player in the gas sector, for the commissioning of its 23,000 cubic meters ultra-modern Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Carrier in Ulsan, South Korea. Kyari commended the achievement as a crucial step in advancing gas utilization within the country and enhancing gas revenues.

Speaking on the development, Kyari affirmed NNPC Ltd’s commitment to supporting similar initiatives, stating that the company, in partnership with West Africa Gas Ltd (WAGL), is actively involved in constructing vessels to bolster LPG supply in Nigeria, with the goal of meeting the growing market demand.

Oyetola Commissions SMEDAN Facility, Flags-off Conditional Grant Scheme in Osun

Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, launched three impactful programs facilitated by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) in Osun State.

The ceremony, held at the Industrial Development Centre (IDC), Oshogbo, marked the initiation of the Conditional Grant Scheme (CGS) for micro-enterprises in Osun State, the National Business Skills Development Initiative (NBSDI), and the commissioning of an ultra-modern Common Facility Centre for Garment and Fashion.

Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative for stimulating the economy and providing welfare for the people, Minister Oyetola stated, “Today’s interventions are loud testaments to the Federal Government’s determination to protect businesses in the country, especially the Nano, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NMSMEs), which is a critical sub-sector of the Nigerian economy.”

He urged beneficiaries to seize the opportunities presented by President Tinubu’s administration, encouraging them to become active contributors to the small and medium scale business sector.

Charles Odii, Director General of SMEDAN, highlighted the significance of Nano, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (NMSMEs) in job creation, employing over 62.5 million individuals and contributing substantially to the GDP and exports.

Odii explained that SMEDAN’s Conditional Grant Scheme aims to formalize micro-enterprises in Nigeria, involving capacity building, CAC registration, micro insurance provision, and granting N50,000 to each recipient. This program has impacted over 40,000 entrepreneurs across 22 states.

The National Business Skills Development Initiative (NBSDI), implemented in 12 states and FCT, focuses on providing entrepreneurship skills, vocational training, and empowerment materials to address the capacity gap among youths. In Oshogbo, 55 individuals received state-of-the-art equipment for fashion, catering, and leatherworks, along with cash grants of N50,000 each.

The day’s activities also included the provision of ATM cards to CGS beneficiaries and the distribution of industrial sewing machines, cookers, mixers, and fabricating machinery to the participants of NBSDI. This comprehensive effort aims to uplift and empower entrepreneurs in Osun State’s fashion and garment industry.
