Yuletide: FCTA COVID-19 Enforcement Team Visits Recreation Parks, Decries Absence of physical Distancing

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Enforcement team has stated that it will not allow persons to violate the appropriate health measures as citizens of Abuja defy the rising number of active COVID-19 cases by thronging in large groups to every available leisure park in the city.

On Sunday, Comrade Ikharo Attah, the FCT Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement, inspected the leisure areas and praised the level of compliance, but condemned the lack of physical separation.

Attah, who stated that the parks’ safety protocols were outstanding, but the masses of pleasure seekers were overwhelming, had a difficult time monitoring both car and enormous human traffic at Magic Land Amusement Park, Millennium Park, and Central Park.

He noted that while he was satisfied with the total compliance with the no face masks, no entry orders, he would want the Park owners to upscale efforts to getting compliance for all the protocols.

According to him, both Ministers of FCT,  Malam Muhammad Musa Bello and Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu have given enough backings for the Enforcement to ensure that residents of the nation’s capital were safe through out the festive periods and beyond.

He added that all relevant agencies in FCTA were working assiduously to control the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 pandemic, and ensure that the figure plummets.

His words , ” From what we are seeing here today, there is enough compliance,  but where we have problems is the issue of physical distancing. There are face mask everywhere,  people are seen wearing them and also washing there hands.

“The strong message from FCTA is that people should own the processes and it should show by the way we comply with the necessary measure. The Ministers want the surge of this pandemic to come as much as possible”.

… Sympathizes With Management Of Next Cash N Carry

Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated that the FCT Administration will ensure that all standard retail malls will have a fire truck ready in the event of an emergency.

Others were instructed to take precautions in securing their valuables.

Aliyu also sympathizes with to the managers and employees of Next Cash N Carry Supermarket following the fire that destroyed a portion of the retail complex on Boxing Day.

The minister, who was on the scene of the fire, praised key stakeholders for their quick response, emphasizing that the spirit of sportsmanship displayed demonstrates how much can be accomplished when people work together.

She also praised the territory’s citizens for supporting the company in salvaging some of the merchandise, noting that in most cases unscrupulous elements could have seized the opportunity to cart away other people’s belongings.

According to her, “sadly, this is another unfortunate inferno in a festive period being December 26, 2021. From the report so far, the fire might have occurred much earlier before it was reported.

“But as soon as it was reported, we must commend the active and quick response of Federal Fire Service, the Navy, Airforce, Army, FEMA, NNPC, NSCDC and other agencies that came to put off the fire. It is unfortunate it got to this extent.

“But again, we must commend the residents and indigenes of the territory for their collective support. Let us keep this good spirit of oneness. There is no goods that was looted here as being speculated.

“People used their own cars to secure whatever they can secure and you can see some of the items there. It is not in our character to loot other people’s items, and I call on residents to keep the good spirit”.

She further said; “every mall of this standard should have a fire truck available by the side. They should make room for emergency because of situations like this. Even though, our fire men did everything possible to salvage the situation, but it was beyond their control”.

NAFDAC Warns Against Indiscriminate Use Of Aphrodisiacs, Says It Can Lead To Organ Damage, Sudden Death

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against using aphrodisiacs, or performance-enhancing medications, to impress their female companions, citing the risk of stroke or sudden death.

The Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, issued the warning in her Christmas and New Year goodwill letter to Nigerians, in which she decried the predominance of performance-enhancing drugs, or “Manpower” in local parlance, in the Nigerian market.

According to Prof. Adeyeye, the bulk of performance-enhancing drugs are not registered with NAFDAC.

“They are brought into the country illegally; if they were registered, producers and peddlers would not be doing what they are doing in supermarkets, social media platforms, and on the streets.”

Prof. Sayo Akintola, NAFDAC’s Resident Media Consultant, said this in a statement in Lagos on Sunday, Prof. Adeyeye lamented that many men have died using performance enhancing drugs and their relatives would blame their death on some imaginary witches in the village.

The statement read in bits; “NAFDAC boss also described as false the claim by the producers of the products that they have no side effects, insisting that majority of the products did not go through the approval process of the Agency. She however, warned that the Agency would not relent in running after the peddlers of such dangerous drugs until they are brought to book for violating the regulations.

“Just like the need to have food and water, intimacy is also a primary requirement in life. Most human beings have the need for intimacy for a healthy sexual life which determines their overall wellbeing. If there are physical or psychological problems to a person’s sexuality it can hamper their self-confidence.

“Many people today have been caught in the web of such circumstances leading them to seek a way out of the wood. In recent times, the use of aphrodisiacs has become the range.

‘’Many people are ignorant of the possible damage that misuse of aphrodisiacs or use of unregistered drugs could cause’’, said Prof Adeyeye, adding that there are manufacturing and quality guidelines, and mandated regulations that control the production, importation, exportation, advertisement, and the use of such products.

According to her, unbridled use of aphrodisiacs has a lot of implications in the entire body system, noting that the use of the products could potentially affect the blood pressure of the body. She stressed that ‘’when you have a disproportionate flow of blood to a particular part of the body and lasting longer than normal, they tend to disrupt the normal flow of the circulatory system’’.

Prof Adeyeye further warned that aphrodisiacs could also interact with other drugs in the system, explaining that the liver is responsible for breakdown of drugs while the byproduct of all waste goes down through the kidneys. ‘’When these things are used especially with some herbal medicines that don’t have dosage and professional prescription, it can lead to internal organ damage. It can hurt the liver and the kidneys, leading to untimely death’’ she warned.

The way the body system works, she explained: ‘’everything should function the way God designed it. When they begin to disrupt those functions overtime it affects the imbalance and the ecosystem of how the body physiology works and can lead to unintended consequences.’’.

‘’For those who have certain health risks, like people that are hypertensive, or people that have heart disease, there is more of anxiety that the drug could stimulate into the system, and with anxiety, that can lead to changes in the physiology of the body and can lead to stroke or sudden stoppage of the heart. These happen in cases when men suddenly slump during sexual intercourse as reported in Rivers and Cross Rivers States recently’’, she said in a tone laden with grief.

‘’There are a lot of side effects. Every drug is a potential poison. Every drug has one side effect or the other. These are chemical products with side effects. In some cases there are associated Adverse Drug Reactions, which means it could lead to death or more serious organ damage depending on usage’’, she said. She insisted that ‘’it’s not all cases of sudden death that are caused by witches and wizards in the village; but in most cases they are caused by what we eat or drink carelessly’’

In the spirit of Christmas and New Year festivities, she urged Nigerians to eat right and drink right to avoid health complications after the annual events.

Prof Adeyeye recalled that over N3b worth of falsified and banned drugs and unwholesome food products were seized by the Agency recently at the Lagos Trade fair complex where no fewer than 20 trailer loads of such banned and unwholesome products were carted away by officers of the Agency’s Investigation and enforcement directorate led by Barrister Kingsley Ejiofor.

She disclosed that some of the drugs impounded at the trade fair complex were performance enhancing drugs. ‘’Worse still they are counterfeited. When something is counterfeited, the manufacturers don’t care about quality. They add what they are not supposed to add or add more than what they are supposed to add. Invariably, the user is the loser’’, she said.

Prof Adeyeye however, disclosed that the Agency has ordered 40 units of a detecting device, TRU SCAN, worth 70,000 dollar each for use on the field to spot check the medicines. She explained: ‘’The device will show you whether a drug is 5mg or 50mg. Before, it would only show you that it’s X-drug, it will not show you the level. This device is both qualitative and quantitative!

According to the DG, NAFDAC is the first Agency in the world to use the Tru Scan which does quantitative spot check on the chemical content in the medicines. It will show the chemical level of the drug.

‘’This is part of the multifaceted approach we are adopting in fighting the preponderance of banned and falsified drugs in the country’’, she said, blaming the menace on people that want to make quick money at the expense of the health and lives of undiscerning consumers.

‘’We will ensure we minimize falsification of drugs to the level that will give a lot of confidence to the consumers.”

Ameachi Celebrates 51st Birthday With Love to Vulnerable Children

…urge society to recognise vulnerable children

The wife of Minister of Transportation, Dame Judith Amaechi in commemoration of her 51th birthday has put a smile on the faces of vulnerable children with donations to two different children’s home.

An act she described as passion because of the joy derived in putting smiles on the face of children.

Speaking to journalists at the end of her visit to Mother Theresa Children’s Home and Victorine Home for Children in Abuja on Thursday, Amaechi explained that apart from having a passion for giving, her visit and donations to the two homes is nothing but a sign of appreciation to God for the opportunity of life.

” I want to thank God for giving me opportunity to see a new day and I want to also thank God for the family, I come from the family of praise, love and sharing, so I think to share with others is the most beautiful thing.

” What else can I say to God, other than to come to a place like this. It is like a ritual to be in the midst of people like this so also is my husband and children. I don’t know what to say but this is what I like doing, this is my passion and so that is why I am here and I feel that it is good to give back to God.

Amaechi noted that the act of giving portrays the practice of her faith- Christianity, and to be Christ-like, one must emulate his styles of actions such as giving cheerfully.

” I also feel that it is a time to show love to those who may not have the kind of privilege that we have. What am I doing? I am practicing the faith that I believe in and that is simply what I am doing here today.

“I thank God because many people have cared for me in my own life too. For instance, I lost my mum at a very tender age and I was given opportunity, if I didn’t what would I have been?

Stating some reasons why the society should recognise the importance of vulnerable children, Amaechi averred that the kids makes up tomorrow and if neglected that form the bane of the society.

” So I am trying to give back as well to the society. How important for the society to recognise vulnerable children? Well to be honest it is a personal thing, it is very important to recognise the fact that the kids make tomorrow, today they are young tomorrow they form the bane of the society, there is nothing any one can do about it.

” Once I was a child, today I am an adult, whatever I was impacted upon, I was going to give back, what I don’t have i can’t give back.

” So the life we show to them today would shapen their future and it would affect the impact in their lives and also affect the impact they will make in the society.

She appreciated the staff and management of the homes for taking good care of the children and encouraged them not to relent their oars in their activities.

The MD of Mother Theresa Children’s Home Catherine Emeagwali and the care givers at Victorine Home for Children thanked the Minister’s wife for her charitable spirit and pray for God to grant her more fruitful years.

FCTA Goes Tough On Hoodlums At Mpape Crush Rock

0

…Removes Unlawful Street markets

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) launched a new attack on hoodlums’ stronghold surrounding the popular Mpape CrushRock tourist attraction, expelling criminal elements suspected of harassing and robbing both locals and visitors.

It would be recalled that FCTA’s previously designated tourism attractions, the Mpape Crush Rock water location had piqued the interest of private sector investors.

Saying, steps to develop the area’s full tourism potential had begun in collaboration with the government, but hoodlum activity in the area remained a major worry.

Comrade Ikharo Attah, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement made this known when it was removing all of the illegal structures built by roadside sellers after they had been cleared a few months prior.

Attah who led the drill, which lasted several hours noted that the two Ministers of the FCT were working hard to commence construction of the Mpape Road projects,  but residents have continued to distract attention by contravening development plans.

He added that the aggressive attack on illegalities around the tourism site,  was to ensure safety for tourists during this Yuletide and the holidays.

While he disclosed that many tourists had been harassed and molested by hoodlums at the site, including one of the media aides to the Deputy Senate President,  Lara Wise,  he stated that the administration cannot watch while criminal elements continue their terror reign.

According to him, even the Divisional Police Officer in Mpape, CSP Adamu Faisa,  who had earlier called for the dislodgement of the hoodlums,  was happy that site was finally secured.

Attah, while warning indigenous people and other residents in Mpape, who were rebuilding the demolished illegal structures,  noted that the administration will not relent in sustaining the operations.

Attah said,  ” coming back to Mpape today is to achieve two things, to clear the road which is already getting congested. They are already rebuilding the illegal structures, secondly, to dislodge the hoodlums in this tourism site, which  has been a problem.

” Looking around here, you will see the activities of scavengers and hoodlums, making tourism activities here very difficult. We have cleared here before and these hoodlums left, but unfortunately, they are regrouping. The hoodlums have been snatching peoples bags and making them pay certain amount”.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Abuja Environmental Protection Board,  Kaka Bello,  said his team would intensify it operations in the area to continue to keep the hoodlums away from the area.

Bello also noted that since  those who are rebuilding the illegal structures,  are not relenting in breaking the laws, his team will also not give up in applying the laws.

0

The Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu has called for unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

She made this known while leading Ambassadors of Voice for Change on a road tour around Abuja’s major streets.

The minister, who was accompanied by members of her immediate family during the road show, emphasized that Nigeria’s unity is non-negotiable, regardless of differing viewpoints, tribes, or religions, and that it is the responsibility of every Nigerian to join the peace effort.

She further hinted that the peace campaign would be taken to all 36 states of the federation to speak the language of peace to other youths in big cities, and that Nigerian youths have resolved not to be used as weapons of mass destruction since the campaign began.

Her words; “Maybe we need to remind ourselves that though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand. No matter our divergent views, no matter our faith, gender, tribe, we must be able to tell ourselves that united we are stronger.

“I appeal to us all with a very strong voice that this road show is not fun fair. Tell your neighbours that from this moment the youths of this country are in one voice saying that we shall fight no more.

“It is your duty and mine to save our common patrimony. I have spoken to my own daughters to stand with me and they are all here to say united we are stronger”.

She, however , called on the youths to fight for the emancipation of Nigeria and for the country to regain its rightful place in committee of nations through the provisions of infrastructures, quality education, and service delivery to Nigerians.

Earlier, the Mandate Secretary FCT Social Development Secretariat, Hajia Hadiza Mohammed Kabir, commended the Ambassadors of Voice for Change for organizing the peace campaign, noting that the country needs peace more than ever before.

She pledged that the Social Development Secretariat would continue to support initiatives that would bring meaningful development to the society.

FCTA Demolishes Slum of Scavengers, Prostitutes, Drug Peddlers Within City Center

0

… Vows to Sustain Exercise

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) attacked a notorious slum in Wuse Zone 3 on Friday, destroying the hideouts of scavengers, prostitutes, criminals, and drug peddlers.

Comrade Ikharo Attah, Senior Special Adviser to the FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement, spoke on behalf of the administration, promising to continue the process to clear the city of all kind of environmental nuisances, stressing that this is unacceptable in a dream city.

In an interview with newsmen immediately after the exercise, Attah said, “This is the heart of the city and must not be turned into a den of criminals, scavengers, and prostitutes.”

His words , “In the heart of the city, where you have scavengers, criminals, brothels, and shanties, there are bound to be drug peddlers who sell drugs to them.”

“When you get there, you see ladies’ ID cards whose bags were stolen, even those of policemen. If we remove this place, they won’t have a place to peddle drugs again or use it as a criminal hideout. We kept coming, we kept cleaning, and eventually they would have to leave the city.

Speaking on the essence of the enforcement exercise, Attah hinted that “this is part of their collaborative effort with relevant agencies and the department in FCTA. The coordinator of AMMC, Tlp. Umar Shauib, got a petition from the neighborhood and was minuted to my office and we galvanised relevant agencies together as a team and we came here to clear it. We have cleared it before, but sadly, many of them rebuild it within one or two months.

“We felt so bad that we could see the scavengers in their large numbers returning very quickly, the illegal shops, shanties, and brothels all returning. What we have observed that makes it more painful is that, despite FCT minister Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello’s commitment and conviction to keep Abuja clean, many people believe that the holiday season is when the administration will not be doing much work, so they are using it to quickly rebuild to make brisk business. If we do not work towards the end of the year, we will be using a lot of resources to work in January.

“They said that they want to use it to make quick sales during the season, but if we leave it, when January comes, they will say, “January is a tough month.” They want to recover all the money they have spent during the festive season. We are telling them, you can’t build this is a rail corridor. You can imagine what happens to a rail corridor if people are building provocatively. It’s very disturbing, but we are determined to keep the city clean.

“This is a rail corridor. This particular lot has not been allocated and awarded for construction. If we sustain enforcement going forward, we will not have any problems. If not, they will come back. We have cleared here before and they came back. We keep clearing it and ensure that it is clear of all nuisances and enchromants. The park and recreation department is looking for a way to manage the greens around here before the rail line comes onboard, “he explained.

Also , the Assistant Director, Monitoring and Enforcement of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Kaka Bello said  the purpose of the exercise is to remove all forms of environmental nuisances around the proposed rail corridor. There are a lot of scavengers who have colonised this place and we felt that such things should not exist at the city centre.

He hinted that, “Our daily routine is to ensure that such environmental nuisances are abated.

He, however, lamented that the administration had removed the place more than five times and they came back, but today we are here with the department of Parks and recreation to ensure that sustainable places are put in place to ensure that these people will not come back.

He added that they will continue to come for mop-up exercises from time to time so that they will not regroup again.

Fuel Hike: NLC plans protest rallies across the 36 States

The Nigeria Labour Congress has threatened a nation wide protest across the 36 states of the federation over the planned hike in Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as patrol.

The rally scheduled to take place January 27, 2022, with a nationwide protest for February 1st 2022 are meant to reject in strong terms and also put straight the position of labor over federal government’s planned petroleum products hike.

The President Nigeria Labor Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba disclosed this in Abuja at the opening ceremony of the
National Executive Committee Meeting.

Ayuba added that the protests would kick off instantly and without notice in all the 36 states if the government goes ahead to increase fuel before the planned January 27 nationwide rallies.

“Pursuant to its rejection and resistance of further increase in the price of petrol, to organize Protest Rallies in all the 36 States of the Federation on 27th January 2022 which would culminate in the submission of protest letters to all the 36 State Governors. Subsequently, a National Protest will take place on 1st February 2022 in Abuja; and

“In case government decides to announce new petrol prices before the proposed protests, the protest will kick off instantly and without any other further notice in every state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory,” the NLC said in a Communique signed by its President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and Secretary – General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.

It urged the government to adopt effective economic policies to halt the inflationary trend as it presents additional pressure on the lean income of Nigerian workers and other citizens and has made life terribly unbearable for the poor masses of our country.

On the issue of insecurity, the NEC lamented that the crises of insecurity in Nigeria has continued to deteriorate since its last meeting and that the parlous state of insecurity apart from scaring away potential local and foreign investors from the Nigerian economy has also unleashed an unquantifiable social dislocation and crisis in the country including food insecurity, widespread hunger and mass destitution.

The meeting therefore urged the Federal Government to consider the recommendations and policy initiatives gleaned from the NLC National Summit on Peace and Security and National Roundtable on Social Protection Cover in developing a National Plan of Action against Insecurity in Nigeria; and

Part of the communique reads: “The Federal Government should adopt a multi-stakeholder approach and innovative non-kinetic intervention model towards achieving a sustainable solution to the crises of insecurity in Nigeria.

“The Plans by the National Assembly and Nigeria Customs Service to introduce excise duties on carbonated drinks manufactured in Nigeria, NEC reasoned that such plans will only exacerbate the prevailing hyper-inflation of essential goods especially food consumables, lead to decline in sales, job losses in the food sub-sector and increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians.

“On the plans for the privatisation of Nigeria’s railways, public healthcare facilities and concession of Nigeria’s major international airports, NEC reasoned that the executive arm of government at the federal level and the National Assembly should work together with Organized Labour and manufacturers in the sub-sector for a win-win solution;

“NEC resolved that plans to privatise and concession prime national assets would be tantamount to ‘State Capture’ of the commonwealth. The NEC urged government and promoters of the privatization and concession plans to learn from the misadventure of the power sector privatization which instead of improving the lives of the ordinary Nigerian have increased the level of suffering and hardship faced by the Nigerian masses; and

“NEC therefore resolved to reject the concession of Nigeria’s four major airports and the privatization of Nigeria’s prime national assets including the Transmission Company of Nigeria and other assets billed through legislative actions for privatisation.”

NTLC Reaffirms Its Commitment To Support FG In Resolving Public Health Issues

0

The Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Public Health Care Delivery (NTLC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government in resolving Nigeria’s public health challenges.

The NTLC chairman, HRH Muhammed Meira, Emir of Argungu, spoke at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency-convened fourth-quarter review meeting today in Abuja (NPHCDA).

He emphasized that the committee is critical to resolving our health challenges and that it stands ready to assist the government and the general public with their health concerns.

His words , “NTLC will continue to be a dependable ally for as long as you are prepared to work with us.

“As this year rolls to an end and a new year is about to begin, I want to call on all of us to rededicate ourselves to work selflessly and with all the influence we can muster to ensure the interruption of the spread of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus in the coming year.

“I call on the Presidential Committee on Covid-19 to reflect on past efforts against major public health concerns and re- strategies to convert vaccine hesitancy, misuse and spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria. I call on the FG to ensure adequate and timely funding of the operation of the NPHCDA.

“I urge all of us to continue to do more until every Nigerian child and mother is protected against risk of death or debilitating condition from ailments that can be prevented.

“Our development partners UNICEF, WHO and Gates Foundation, we cherish you and sincerely thank you for your support and trust,” he stated.

His Royal Highness also commended the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and his management team for their dedication to duty.

Similarly , the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar in his remarks hinted that: “This body was established 14 years ago to fight polio which we never looked back especially on our discharge and effort to ensure the health of the society.

“We want to go out to convince people about the COVID-19 pandemic and how to tackle it. For use to convince people the government needs to convince us, leaders, to convince people to take the vaccine. The people must have trust in the government. We will fight COVID-19 the way we fight polio.

“The traditional leaders need to be more educated to be able to educate their communities”.

The Executive Director NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shuaib appreciated the support, sacrifice and leadership of the royal father over the last few years.

His words , “We have vaccinated over 8 million eligible Nigerians against COVID-19. Although this figure is far from our target of 112 million individuals to attain health immunity, we have seen a significant improvement in the figures since we launched the mass vaccination campaign to strengthen immunity against COVID-19.

“The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 response, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health at the NPHCDA has approved the administration of booster doses for persons that have completed three doses of the vaccine. The booster dose is meant to strengthen the immune response to COVID-19. People who take the booster dose have greater protection against COVID-19.

“To be eligible to take the booster dose, you must be 18 years or above and must have received the second doses of the vaccine 6 months ago.

“The administration of the booster dose commenced on December 10, 2021 and it’s been sent all across the country. We call on all eligible Nigerians to get their booster doses, especially in the face of the Omicron Variant that is spreading so rapidly across the country. As you all are aware, the Omicron Variant of the COVID-19 virus has already been detected in Nigeria, although studies are being conducted to determine the nature of this variant.

“I want to assure you that the FG has deployed the necessary logistics to lodge and control the variant. We do not need to start a fresh war against Omicron. It is just a variant of the COVID-19 virus that can be handled if we comply and take recommended doses of the vaccine while continuing to observe protective measures such as wearing face masks, regular washing of hands and [keeping the] social distance to protect ourselves,” he hinted.
